    Hello Gert,

You almost always post three photographs at a time and yet each and every one of those photographs would be a perfect upload in itself, especially as your notes are always so inspiring too.

Obviously I am unable to translate the writing on the wall behind these vegetable vendors but I can see from your two workshop images that life was hard in those days, especially in the image of the lady walking through a tall and narrow street laden with boxes on her head - the sort of situation we imagine from poor African parts of the World.

And, while women toil with their labours and carrying heavy loads, we see in your other workshop image men hard at work with picks and hammers rebuilding their town - a sight far removed from the modern day of powered diggers and machines while workers relax leaning on their shovels and fill in forms and talk on their mobile phones.

    Excellent!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Bonjour Jean Claude,

A wonderful photograph of the details of this splendid ceiling of Edinburgh's McEwan Hall, perfectly composed and perfectly taken with glorious light and fantastic rich colours and wonderful details and sharpness.

Is this place open to the public? I ask that because I have actually been in this place - but that was 50 years ago, seated with many others sitting my surgical fellowship examination - so I didn't spend much time examining the beautiful architecture then! So, if it's open, I must try to go back again (in a more relaxed mood this time) to enjoy the place better!

    A lovely photograph!

    Beautiful!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Hello Jean,

Mosaics are a wonderful form of artwork, dating back millennia, and I love this close-up view of this work of art which I not only admire on account of its beauty but also on account of the painstaking work which must have gone into its production. Perhaps even more demanding than "Pargetting"? :)

I must say that I feel the same about other forms of art too: I admire the works of Beethoven, Chopin and others but also, as an amateur (and not very good) pianist myself, I really admire the skill of the performer.

Your workshop photograph puts your main image perfectly into context.

Glorious rich colours, a fine composition and exquisite details and sharpness.

    Beautiful!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Hi dear Malgo,

What do you mean "I have no idea what to post"? This is another briliant shot and, with an interesting note, is far more worthy than most of the photographs we see here (including my own!).

I seem to recall from school chemistry classes that soap is made from fat and caustic soda. We know that olive oil is good for us in our food but is soap made from olive oil any better for our health than soap made from any other fats?

I like shops like this one - "specialist" shops which just sell one product - that product might be cheese or wine or cameras but specialist shops like this always have knowledgeable staff who are keen to advise. The trouble is that, with the internet, we can now all do our own research, discover what we want and then buy it more cheaply on Amazon than we can buy it in places like this - so specialist shops suffer badly nowadays.

Still, a lovely photograph, very well taken despite what must have been quite poor light, and yet with good colours and detail.

    Excellent!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Hello Stephen,

Well, I must admit that I'm not quite sure. I suppose if there is a run-down area of a city which requires a little brightening up and if the graffiti is tasteful and well executed, then it is probably all right. But I wouldn't want this sort of thing on the walls of my house.

Having said that, Gert seemed more than happy to have something of this kind on his own home.

Whatever our opinions, this is a fine photograph of a street in Lisbon, again with a fine diagonal composition and showing the graffiti in good light with good colours. But, funnily enough, the features of this street I find most attractive are the cobblestones on the roadway as well as the pavement - they seem to be present throughout Portugal and, while they are very attractive, I've often found them to be extremely slippery, even on a dry day!

    A fine picture!

    Excellent!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Bonjour Nicolas,

What a glorious scene made so much more attractive by the recent snowfall!

But it is also interesting to note that here we see a white building on the right but the white paint on that house is not so white as the pure white snow on the left or on the distant hillside.

A beautifully composed image with glorious light, colours and sharpness.

    Ciao caro Silvio,

As always, a fascinating and very informative note - and I was interested to know that you had also been having very low temperatures. Is -6°C very unusual for you in January?

But the covering of snow has certainly given this lovely ancient church a beautiful aspect, making the golden stonework stand out brilliantly in the warm winter sunlight and against a grey sky.

A beautifully presented composition with lovely light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

    Beautiful!

    John.

    Bonjour Claude,

Your workshop picture suggests that this tower was very tall. But your main photograph suggests that you were perhaps only about 10 metres or less above this young lady who very kindly greeted you with a smile and a wave.

But, even though she probably didn't realise it, she has, with the help of some bright low-angled winter sunlight, provided you with a remarkable and quite amusing image, the extended shadows of her legs almost disappearing out of the frame.

A very well seen and captured candid shot. Henri C-B would be proud of you! :)

    Amicalement,

    John.

    Ciao caro Carlo,

This photograph is very much in the style of Rob (alvaraalto) and I'm sure he will love it when he sees it! I love it too!

There's nothing quite like studying some work of art and then watching the reactions of another person when they study it too. And you have caught this lady's "body language" as she studies this work of Escher - and perhaps can't quite make up her mind what she thinks of it!

A beautifully simple composition, very well realised and taken with good light, colours and sharpness too.

    Brilliant!

    Kind Regards,

    John.

    Hello dear Mesut,

I'm not normally a fan of graffiti but your two images of this wall in Kadikoy show that this is not some poor quality amateurish daubing of paint but the work of real artists.

The picture of Chaplin is superb! I don't understand any of the text but it is also very well presented and wonderfully coloured too.

And an excellent pair of photographs of this street art. Thank you, Mesut.

    Excellent!

    John.

    Good evening Krzysztof,
You posted a nice series of pilots portraits, but only one woman pilot? that's a very low number statistically. In Israel, the only way to be a pilot is going through a very difficult pilot-training course in the Israeli-Air-Force, and in recent years the number of 18 years old girls taking part in this intensive course is only increasing, even dramatically.
Anyway, a fine picture of the lady-test-pilot.
    Have a nice weekend,
    Ike

A great place to view the whole of Firenze from a high point.
For photographers, best time of the day is early morning, but as a tourists we can't do any specific timing with that, so my pictures from this place were not best success of mine. Though, I enjoy the picture you had posted here.

    Hello Sven,
Maybe it's a dangerous bump (didn't they do something about it after the fatal accident?), but this road looks very nice and idyllic, like going through a tunnel into the deep forest. It is probably a very safe forest, unless there are bears and wolves in Rheinland-Pfalz, which I doubt. It's an attractive composition and it's well scanned, although I see you suffer the same problem as I do regarding noise.
