To PaulVDV: trams

Thanks Paul,
The Calcutta trams have been operating since 1902 and are the only ones remaining in India. I haven't seen trams anywhere else, so they must have stopped running in other cities long...

To kasianowak: choice

Thanks Kasia for your kind critiques today.
Yes, I did consider using the street stall for the main upload, but decided that there are so many street stalls on the site already (I have contributed...

To PaulVDV: no danger

Thanks Paul,
Imagining the level of crime that could be expected in a country like India, with still a very high level of incredible poverty, it is probably among the relatively safest countries in...

I loved the tree lined streets of beautiful 18th-20th century Russian buildings in central Odessa and the elegant area above the Potemkin stairs. I never bothered with the streets along the sea,...

To kasianowak: disappointing

Hello Kasia, thanks for your comments.
I don't remember exactly what happened here 45 years ago, but I am relatively certain that I saw the sweeper as I came up the hill. Maybe I even noticed the...

To macjake: white people

Thanks Craig,
Although this was 35 years ago they had certainly seen white people. Ouagadougou was full of international "helpers". But they had possibly never posed for a camera before.
Have a...

To kasianowak: Thank you Kasia

Hello Kasia,
Thank you so much for your kind words, and also for adding this to your favourites. I am surprised of that, since I have received several comments that the colours are all wrong.
Best...

To ChrisJ: ws

Hello Chris, thanks for your effort and the time spent.
I am not entirely convinced by your alternative colours. They seem too blue, or purple, to truly reflect the strong, warm tropical afternoon...

I missed that workshop before. It's a great photo. I rather like it better than the main picture, but of course you are no Robert Capa. He didn't have any photos of Iringó. :D

To kasianowak: scan quality

Thank you Kasia.
I can assure you the scan isn't very good, but I am quite sure that the slide is in a perfect condition. The Kodachromes seem to have been indestructible, at least when sensibly...

To emka: quality of slide

Thanks Malgo,
Many members have said that this is not so bad for such an old slide, but I think the "old" colours are mainly because of unclever scanning. Most of my Kodachromes from 40 years ago...

To emka: sculpture

Hello Malgo and György,
The sculpture is new. I checked my photos from 2015 and found one from the same angle. There was no sculpture then.
Cheers.

To Royaldevon: cows

Thank you Bev,
I would much rather meet a cow or a water buffalo in an Indian street than on a European field. They are usually very calm.
Best wishes,
Gert

To jean113: changes

Hello Jean, thanks for your kind comments.
Since large parts of this city were destroyed or heavily damaged in an earthquake in 2001 I would guess there have been great changes. I get an impression...

To Lidka: scan

Thank you,
Yes this is a scan. There were no digital cameras in 1985. :D
I have added this information to the note.
Cheers,
Gert

To kasianowak: her thoughts

Thank you Kasia,
You are probably quite right about what she is thinking, but I believe she is also feeling just a little bit proud of being chosen.
All the best,
Gert

To kasianowak: right foot

Thank you Kasia,
Yes, isn't it funny that Indian men have this habit of standing with their right foot like that. :D
What mainly saddens me when I look at my old photos is that I could have done so...

To PaulVDV: petrified

Thank you Paul,
He probably was petrified because he had never posed for a photo before and didn't quite know what would happen to him. I also suspect he hadn't seen that many westerners before.
As...

Thank you Malgo,
I have posted photos from inside temples in Bhuj years ago (but mainly showing people). I can make links to them the next time.

Gert

Hello again,
Thanks for the workshop, but now Craig will probably get jealous that he didn't get any. :p

To Royaldevon: first time photo

Hello Bev, thanks for your kind remarks.
I agree that the workshops are probably better photos (although I clumsily cut off the girls' toes), but I was so happy to get a picture of someone wearing...

To tyro: thank you John

Hello John,
Thank you again for your kind words. I have no idea of the purpose of that long staff. Probably there was none at all, although perhaps originally it had been used for something, maybe...
