To Royaldevon: maintenance

Thank you Bev,
There is certainly a roof, where the owner would store food supplies or household equipment or dry some of the harvest. The wooden things coming out of the walls are meant for...

To jmdias: flash

Thank you Jorge,
I think Turks have a more liberal attitude to allowing non-believers in the mosques even at prayer times than most other Muslims, except maybe in the most touristy mosques in...

To tyro: checkpoints

Thank you John for your keen interest and kind remarks.

I didn't need any trained "nose" for this place. The checkpoints were on the main roads all over Mali, on each side of every town or major...

To Royaldevon: freelancing

Thank you Bev for showing such an interest in this photo.
Yes, I was freelancing during that winter. I was between temporary jobs, which suited me well. I had received a government scholarship to go...

To foxy: solar plant

Thank you Loong,
In fact I have lots of photos of that failed power plant. I just thought they looked so boring that I never considered scanning or posting any. But I will take another look at them....

To papagolf21: solar energy

Thank you Philippe,
I think the project in Mopti is something else and developed much later, and it is a long way from Diré. In fact there seem to be several similar projects being developed in...

Hello John, thank you once again for a very well written critique on my photos. Your detailed comments make me feel the hard PP work was worth the while. :)

To macjake: total

Thanks Craig,
I'm glad you had a look at this.
Total is a huge French oil and gas company. They have petrol stations (or maybe you say gas stations in Canada) all over West Africa.
Cheers,
Gert

To Royaldevon: missing note

Thank you Bev,
I just realized I had only posted the first paragraph of my note. I always start with only one paragraph, otherwise the TE server will delete all information. I usually remember to...

To tyro: not so close

Thank you John,
In fact, the main photo and the one of the lady and the man carrying the planks were not taken very close to each other. The WS with the two persons was from the same place as the...

To PaulVDV: now I have

Thank you Paul,
No I hadn't seen the WS 3 and 4 which were not yet available, but now I have. They are of course also nice, especially the one with the swing. Some children would have fun with it....

To tyro: pirogue

Thank you John for your kind and careful remarks.
I have no idea what constitutes a "pirogue", I only used that word because that's what the locals called them. There were smaller ones, looking very...

Yes, I have also thought of Pieter Brueghel, and maybe others, when I see this photo.
Kind regards,

I will reconsider my Swedish strategy.
I'm sorry that I forgot to add the gosling to my favourites, but I've done that now. You must have travelled at least a few hundred yards by bike to find it,...

To Royaldevon: screens & fabrics

Thank you Bev,
I would imagine the screens are supposed to protect the traders and their products from the sun, but looking at the shadows they don't seem to have been of much use during that time...

To BennyV: pirogue

Thank you Benny,
I travelled by shared taxi from Mopti to Djenné. In the end you probably did that too. It was quite simple.
But reading my diary the other day I was reminded of the terrible idea I...

To Royaldevon: sand dancers

Thank you Bev,
No, I had never heard of those sand dancers. They look like ancient Egyptian figures come alive, and they're a lot funnier than these two men. Even though I don't remember taking this...

To emka: do they know?

Thank you Malgo,

Yes, the men in blue may very possibly have been Tuaregs. There were several in Mopti, and all over the country.

The prosecutor claims he knows who killed Palme. He had been...

To tyro: djenné

Thank you John for your kind words, and again for spending time on research.
I think the wooden "struts" also serve as reinforcing the mud and straw construction, and I think I have mentioned that...
