Default wider rating options

maybe this has been discussed before...
I find the point system, if it is to stay, would benefit from a wider rating range; say 0 to 5. I think a written critique could be better supported by more scoring options. There is such a wide range of photos of various quality for the critiquer where some definetely deserve a 5. In this perspective, a larger rating scale would help define a true talent. Just a thought

I think the current rating system is OK because it is simple. Four choices are enough for current critiques. The only point on which I agree with dopiro is how to rate exceptional shots. We can rate a difference of quality between "Good" and "Great", but it's true that sometimes we would like to point out the "perfect shot" to our opinion, which is more than great !
A "Exceptional" smiley could perhaps be added with a 4 or 5 points value, but I would also suggest that we could give only one of that kind per day. Otherwise, exceptional views will soon become common ones, and that is not the purpose.

yes, it seems to be a great idea for me - "Exceptional" smile with 3 or 4 points, limited to only one per day, to emphasize that this one photo is exceptional for us

I think it's a good idea too, but I would probably be more demanding than 1 per day. Exceptional photos could only be marked 2 or 3 per week for example.

I understand your thoughts on this. I just don't agree with them :-) I would actually like to see the "Not Useful" option removed. After who am I to say that somebody elses critique is not useful to anybody which is what is implied, to me at least, by clicking that option.
If I was to use "Not Useful" for every critique which I didn't feel added to my knowledge then there would be an awful lot of them clicked!!
I think 0 to 5 would add to the very thing that most people seem to want to avoid - this site being viewed as primarily competitive.
I do get a bit of a buzz from people finding my critiques and workshops useful but no scores wouldn't stop me participating.

Keith you seem to be talking about a different issue. dopiro was talking about the point options available when writing a critique on a photo. You are talking about the ratings of critiques themselves. That's the way it seems from reading your comment anyway.

Sorry, you are right about different issues. I still feel the 0 to 5 option could lead to an increase in the 'competitive' activity on the site and personally I don't want that to happen.

Turn off the points, that's my answer. I don't use them anymore and like it better this way. I can tell you about your shot without the little cute smiley things. Same for my shots, I don't post them for points or to win a prize- I do it because I can and maybe a few people might enjoy them. I'm haven't been here since the beginning to impress anyone- just to have a little enjoyment from a photo. Your mileage may vary.........
Just my thoughts, for what they are worth.

I'm with Coyote on this. Point free and happy. Perhaps we should create a 12-step program for getting people off points!

well i like points. I like giving them and i like receiving them. I think TE sould talk to their sponsors and have a program where points can be exchanges for goods or exotic trips. Could even have an adjacent casino module to TE where we could gamble our photos for their point value to win more and more points.
Thats the whole point...
