Photographer's Note

Here is my last picture, at least for the time being, from my journey to Algeria in 1975.

This is from the city of Constantine, the third largest in the country, situated in the northeast approximately 80 km from the Mediterranean sea.

Constantine is built on a large plateau high above the surroundings and with a deep gorge cutting through the centre. Among major cities it remains one of the most spectacular I have seen.

This photo was taken during Eid al-Fitr, the major Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. Most people were free from work and thousands of families, all dressed in their best clothes, were going for walks through the city. From what I can imagine (my memories of 38 years ago are not crystal clear) I must have taken this from one of the bridges crossing the Rhumel Gorge.

I have scanned this from a Kodachrome slide. A larger version can be seen here.
