Photographer’s Note

Timgad is one of the best preserved Roman cities in the world. Timgad was founded in 100 Ap. JC, and was occupied until the Islamic conquest. Initially it was built as a camp for veterans of the African legion of the Roman army. it was Then subsequently developed to become one of the largest cities of North Africa, with an intense cultural and urban life to which testify its buildings like the theater (5800 seats), the library, the baths, the capitol, etc.. It was one of the strongholds of the schism of donatists. it was abandoned after the Islamic conquest.

Since 1982, Timgad is classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but today, The site is threatened by various natural and human agents. Each year the theater is the venue for an international festival of song that gets a lot of people. This situation may causea great risk for the stability of this monument.

This is a view on the hole city from th theater, the two columns at the bottom are the ruins of the capitol.
