Photographer’s Note
From the main market square in Ghardaïa in the Algerian desert. This picture is from 1975, but nothing would probably look dramatically different today. Ghardaïa is the main city of the M'Zab valley, populated by a very traditional Muslim sect. I have found very few, if any, women on my pictures from this visit.

Interesting oldie, well scanned, to take us to this place and this time... I really wonder if this place has changed by now...In some countries the marketplace is actually a women's place... Thanks for sharing...

Hej Gert,
Would be interesting to see what this place looks like today, and especially to see how people are dressed. Would there be more women here today? A very good picture from another world!

Hi Gert, Again amazing quality of this old photo. I love such markets! Indeed, no women at all. Splendid scene. I suppose it can look similar also now if it is far from the tourist places.
Thanks for sharing

Hi Gert,
Such a nice image and fairly good quality from a scan. Really nice daily life street scene, it put us right in the middle of the street, it the next best thing to being there ourself. Perhaps women in this part of the world are not allow to be so active in public places? Good daily life shot. thanks Gert.

Hi Gert!
Another great photo from your archives. Nicely scanned. It's a great representation of the market area and street life. And like you say, it probably would not look that much different now. Full of interesting details! Nice work, cheers,
Steve

Hello Gert
I assume this photo was taken not far from your previous posting within the main market square - and probably just around the corner from my only posting of Ghardaia. I am also looking at the 1970 posting by henrytf and trying to guess how they all fit in together. I can remember not seeing too many of my gender in North Africa. A detailed and sharp photo - and a very well preseved slide from 34 years ago. Tfs, Marlene

Hello Gert,
these oldies taken so long ago look both nostalgic and are historically very valuable (let alone the subjects of such photos which you chose!).
Interesting capture, very well balanced composition - and an excellent quality of this scan!
When I see such old photos (especially taken with a film camera) I really don't know if they should be assessed the same way as digital ones. Maybe not! because, imho, they belong to a quite different category of photos.
Kind regards,
Elena

Hello Gert,
Nice one from the 'eye level', quite often we loose sight of whats on the eye level by looking for that perfect PoV. This one is great, showing us the hustle and bustle of the market life.
Thanks for sharing
