Photographer’s Note

Un garçon regarde son équipe de foot jouer contre les belges... Il est né en Afrique et appuyé sur une poteau en fer auquel pend une chaine.
Il n'en faut pas plus pour suggérer un contexte bien différent. Serait-ce pareil avec un petit garçon européen?
C'était la spécialité d'un ami photographe sur TE: Bwiti.

A boy watches his team play football against the Belgians ... He is born in Africa and stands near an iron pole with a chain.
Sufficient to suggest a very different context. Would it be the same with a little European boy?

this is very bwiti yes, did he do the postprocessing for you, or you did it in his style marc?... a striking portrait with the thoughtfull expression on the kid's face... and the chain adds potential for totally different stories than the story of a kid watching a football game...

cette photo est une des plus belles sur TE. Elle évoque toute la misère qui s'est abattue sur les noirs réduits à l'esclavage pendant une très longue période.

Le traitement choisi est magnifique. Les chaînes nous ramènent à l'esclavage, horrible période montrant la bassesse de l'homme qui, malheureusement, ne change pas. Un très beau et très fort portrait.

Bonjour Marc,

This is really an excellent portrait picture. I like the title and the note too. They add a touch of bitter poetry.

The treatment of this shot does remind me of Bwiti. When I started on TE, he was one of the photographers who made the most impact on me. In fact I miss him, simple as that. I hope he gets to see this picture.

Hallo Marc,

ZEER indrukwekkend, misschien wel de beste die ik ooit van je gezien heb. Als de ketting schakel niet zijn oor zou raken had ik er een groene ster aan vast geplakt. Expressie is absolute top, net als je kadering en kleurtoning.
Lijkt wel alsof hij dwars door ons heen kijkt...waar is zijn jeugdigheid gebleven vraag ik mij als ik dit zie.
Heel erg goed....mag dit graag zien....top.

Well handled light and the control of exposure has contributed towards the shallowe depth and the sharpness of image..love the juxtaposition of the face to the chains..can have several interpretations really..a reflective one more than anything else..

Neat and i like it that way :) - the sunday isnt over yet !

Ver well seen. The boy and the chain evoke all kinds of emotion here. This image is a subtle reminder of the days of slavery or it could be a reminder that many of these people are chained to poverty. The exposure is bang on and the sepia toning is just right for this subject. The frame is novel and adds interest to the overall image. This one is going to my favourites.

Une photo plutot intrigante et comme tu l as bien decrit dans ta note, assez evocatrice; tu as bien levé le point.
Superbe traitement avec un bon rendu cuivré (bichromie?). De meme, l encadrement sobre et decentré fonctionne tres bien.
Effectivement, ca fait fortement penser aux posts de Bwiti.

ein ausdrucksvolles Portrait von diesem Jungen in eindrucksvoller Qualität. Sein Blick wirkt traurig und vielleicht sogar schon fast verbittert. Die Ketten sind eine gute Zugabe, denn auch wenn die Sklaverei mittlerweile der Vergangenheit angehört, müssen diese Kinder meist ein Leben lang unter den Ketten ihrer Lebensbedingungen leiden und auch oft Sklavenarbeit verrichten, weil sie sonst nicht überleben können.

Bonjour, Marc. Un portrait de grande qualité. Ce garçon semble porter toute la misère du monde et ton image exprime bien toute la tristesse qu'il y a dans son regard. Ici, pas question de pose, ça a été saisi sur le vif. Et puis, il y a la symbolique de la chaîne. Attaché à l'Afrique, attaché à son destin, ce gamin est un symbole de ce continent pauvre. Un PP qui me plaît bien et qui va bien avec l'image.

Formidable, Marc ! Aussi bien le traitement de l'image que le contenu et le message de la photo, tellement de choses à voir dans ce regard rêveur, on s'y perd - tes dernières photos sont superbes et celle-ci particulièrement (cette texture de peau, comme du bronze est vraiment étonnante), bravo !

Très contente de faire une petite visite sur TE (mais, comme je viens de l'écrire à Marianne : computer en panne, j'utilise un mini laptop de voyage ce qui n'est pas évident :((( --- mais à part ça, tout va bien, de retour de Turquie où le printemps était particulièrement pluvieux et froid !)

Hi Marc,
The post process is really great and work very well for this post, I normally don't like image that is too strong in contrast and saturation, but this one work perfectly. It really bring out the charactor in the boy and that look is engaging with a sense of sadness. Really great work.

i'm not so sure about "ironing" the colours so that the boy looks a bit artificial... but on the other hand - i'm strongly in favour of this excellent portrait with that serious face...

Salut Marc,

Cette photo se démarque avec grâce, pas seulement pour ton traitement PP, mais pour la prise elle-même. Cadrage au poil, excellente expression du sujet au regard calme mais intense et l'inclusion du poteau... et de sa chaîne.

J'avoue que ton interprétation est fort symbolique, peut-être que je n'y aurais même pas pensé. Avec ton commentaire, ta photo prend un tout autre sens.

Ce que j'aime par-dessus tout, c'est le highlight sur sa tête, son cou et sa mâchoire, puis cet énorme bokeh derrière.

Résultat pro, no doubt about it.
