Chez les Peuls, ce sont les hommes qui gardent les troupeaux pendant que les femmes restent au campement. Ils partent au lever et reviennent au coucher du soleil. Même les jeunes garçons passent leur journée avec le troupeau sous le soleil brûlant.

Among the Fulani, the men keep the herds while the women remain at the camp. They leave at sunrise and return at sunset. Even young boys spend their day with the herd under the burning sun.

Hallo Marc,

Als ik naar de grond kijk wat valt er dan te boeren....hij zal wel meer bezig zijn met het vee om het naar iets vruchtbare grond te leiden. Nog erg jong, een hard bestaan, maar toch zit er een mooie verlegen glimlach op zijn gezicht en heel mooi vastgelegd.

Bonjour, Marc. Celle-ci a moins de force que l'image précédente, mais elle me plaît bien. J'aime bien le beau sourire du berger sous son grand chapeau. Les vaches à l'arrière-plan situent bien le contexte de l'image et je trouve qu'il y a une belle unité de tons dans la photo.

I am smiling because I see you are D700 user with this good piece of glass. And this will be my 1st visit to your gallery but I will mark you on my private list :) for obvious reasons of usergroup. Honestly speaking I have no idea where is Benin and must look up the map to locate it, and it is easy, next to Nigeria.

Nice portrait shot of the boy in styled straw hat with fill in flash which I presume would help to avoid dark shadow under that hat although honestly speaking I detect some blur [I know this lens will give superb sharpness] and lower contrast in this view, and the skin tone, especially on the face, looks as if affected by flash?

Good expression with such a superb smile and backdrop in this choice of POV.

I like it. You have a way with portrait.

Z'ai bu Zidane dans les (zé)buts!
Bonne complicité de ce jeune gardien de vaches (cowboy) avec un petit coup de flash qui éclaire le visage et fait ressortir l'enfant entier par rapport au fond brûlé. Que mangent les vaches dans ve pays?

Ce portrait du jeune Peul est magnifique. Il y a de l'intelligence dans le regard et le sourire de cet enfant. Bonne gestion de la lumière avec ce coup de flash pour atténuer les ombres.

This is the only photo with the story to tell..
The only one that have the signs of the good composition and the reason for uploading...

That upper left corner... Some unnecessary skies ?
His hand cut in half ( either eliminate it completely, or show it as a whole), and the last one... That 'something' behind his arm...?
What is it ?
Cloning it out would take two seconds...

Still... A photography... The real one...
Regardless of place and scene...
A photography...
A rarity in here...

Everything has been said in Polonaise's comment, except maybe that the boy's hat is really great too.
The picture does remind me of a painting, half arty, half kitchy/romantic. The flash use is always tricky, but here it is spot on.
The best of your Africa shots? I wouldn't know, there are few contenders...

this is really a wonderful closeup shot - an excellent portrait of "a boy with a faint smile" which arouses a smile on my lips, too :)
Concerning the composition, I would agree with the opinion expressed before me. But I would crop the photo right next to the edge of the boy's hat (those bright "objects" seem a bit distracting to me... they prevent us from concentrating more on his face); and clone out - or crop? - that bottom part which shows a bit of his hand.

Hi Marc,

A lovely smile and a nice piece of daily life, I particularly like the old straw hat that barely holds together, so big on his kids' face.

I would agree with George's and Fanni's comments on the brightness, and suggestions of crop/cloning. I have also seen the next one you posted, and frankly, on both, without your note, apart from specialists, I don't think anybody would know that he is carrying a machete ! :))). I have never used flash outside, the result is very natural and soft. Wondering if a tiny tad more sharpness in the details...(straw hat, eyes, clothes), could have been achieved ? To nipick:).

ça devait me tracasser de n'avoir pas vraiment compris,et je suis donc revenue fouiller dans ta galerie!Et voilà,j'ai trouvé la fameuse photo avec la critique de George!Personnellement,ler bout de ciel ne me gêne pas,et c'est à peine si j'ai remarqué la main coupée!Mais c'est vrai que si on est perfectioniste,ce sont des détails qui peuvent gêner!Mais je dois dire ,que moi,je préfère le format de l'autre photo plutôt que ce format carré,que tout le monde a baptisé format carper,et que je ne trouve pas forcément bien adapté pour un portrait!Sinon,le gamin est aussi adorable dans une photo que dans l'autre!
