Ouidah's Gate of No Return commorates the thousands of slaves who left the shores of West Africa from this very site. Although it might be too small to make out in this photo, the frieze depicts two rows of bounded slaves walking solemnly towards a ship in the ocean.

I get the same feeling from seeing this photo as I would from seeing Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Seeing both monuments evokes much sadness, though I have more of a feeling of helplessness when I look at this shot.

The sky is perfect for this as it seems like there is a great void on the other side of the gates.

Great shot with very moving subject matter.

Great picture Caleb!

As it has already been said, the fact that there is only sky behind it and the sweet evening light add something mystical and intemporal to your picture. We almost can see the slaves walking through here, leaving their families and country to the corn fields of america...
