"Highway to Hell" aurait été peut être été mieux adapté pour cette image... Cela faisait quelques semaines que j'étais au Congo et je commençais à peine à digèrer la transition d'avec le libre, intègre et sympathique Burkina..., je découvre pour la première fois le "Nord" et profite de la fin d'après-midi pour une virée en pirogue sur l'Alima. Après 2h, retour au "port" de Oyo, capitale présidentielle aux allures (ratées) de paradis artificiel au milieu de nullepart. Un timide "Yamoussoukro" en quelques sorte... A quelques centaines de mètres, je remarque un attroupement de personnes et de militaires (gardes présidentiels aux bérets violets)... et au final c'est sur nous que se tournent les regards et finalement sur ma pomme les doigts...
Première leçon de Congo... Héritage de l'influence marxiste et marque d'une démocratie "eclairée", un appareil photo dans les mains d'un moundélé, c'est premièrement suspect à quelques encablures de la ville présidentielle, et surtout la bonne occasion de se faire et plaisir et un peut d'argent... Me voila arrèté, dépouillé du passeport et emmené à l'écart à la maison du commandant du port par des militaires faussement gogenard et armés...
Menaces, intimidations, contrôle et recontrôle des "pieces", palabres, claquements de culasse de Kallach' et surtout le D200 qui passe de mains en mains, menaçé à tout instant de chuter lourdement... Bref j'en menne pas large et la présence de Rufin, un collègue congolais, n'est pas forcément rassurante... Ils ne sont finalement ni sympas, ni maléables...
Quatres heures plus tard et 40.000 Cfa en moins, je sortais libre avec mon appareil et les clichés...

Bref retenir que sortir son appareil n'est pas un droit acquis et que, à juste titre ou non, de bonne foi ou pas, il convient de na pas se concidérer en terre conquise. ;-)

Hello Frank,
Another fine shot of travelling in roadless Africa. A good choice to have the canoe coming into the picture from the side. Your description of soldiers being dangerously suspicious of cameras sounds very, very familiar, infortunately.

jeez, what a frightening experience, and good to read you "only" lost some money...
this makes this an even more special photo than it already is.
terrific view along the river with its wonderful green banks, superb addition of the man in the canoe on the left side.

Hi Frank,

Good story you have written there and quite truly your comment on basic not applicable everywhere. Well, Congo is a good example of the non-applicability of basics. Good story afterwards, but even better not to end up in such a story at all.
Why 'Highway to hell'? What is the direction we are looking at? He seems to go with the flow, which could only be North-Western to the sea - which is the highway out of hell then, coming from Eastern Congo.

I was first attracted to the dynamic light coming in from the side when I saw this picture in the thumbnail. It adds very nice highlights where it needs them and creates shadows along the shoreline trees which adds to the drama of this man paddling his way down this large river. Even with all these great elements your story is even more engaging. I'm sorry that all happened to you but good to hear you came out of it ok. Sounds like one scary situation to be in.

voici un bel exemple du photoreportage! Je connais très bien la situation dont tu parles ayant vécu 12 ans en Afrique centrale (quelle différence avec l'Afrique de l'ouest!!!)
Mais tu est vraiment parti de l'autre bout du monde! A Oyo... comment es-tu arrivé jusqu'à là? Je sais que les liaisons sont très difficiles.
La photo rend honneur à ce fleuve majesteux.

Another great shot, superbly composed and cropped. Great light and colours, enormous effect of perspective. I think the title of the photo in the frame is a distraction from the man in the canoe; I think it would look better if you moved it to the right side.
