Le Kasaï Express Photo

Photographer’s Note

Le Kasaï est une province de plus de 300000km² complètement enclavée en plein coeur de la RD Congo.
La "ville" principale, Mbuji Mayi (3Mhab) ne peut pratiquement plus être atteinte que par avion. Cela signifie que tout arrive donc par la voie aérienne (pour ceux qui en ont les moyens) : huile, essence, ciment, pièces de rechange,etc.
Aux alentours de Mbuji Mayi, il existe encore quelques pistes plus ou moins praticables qui desservent la province. Inutile de préciser que les quelques (rares) véhicules qui s'y aventurent sont surchargés!
La triste réalité est que les accidents sont très nombreux en raison de l'état de maintenance lamentable de ces engins... mais ils roulent, roulent et roulent encore jusqu'à rendre leur dernier soupir.

Great photo!! The colours and composition really do it for me here... The way the road curves and allows the eye to follow the pattern of interest and the rich browns and greens of the landscape combined with the truck makes for a very appealing photo.

Hi Eric,

Your landscape is so recoginizable to me! I worked some time in the North of Angola - border province of Zaire. Same roads, same mode of transport, only more landmines.
This road is actually pretty good. They recently levelled it out with such a machine that scrapes of the surface. Good shot. Very out-of-life and well focussed / sharpened. Nice one!

Hi Eric,
Wonderful feeling on this. Passengers giving a greeting from the top of full load. Road with deep tracks. Slight motion blur giving a feeling of speed. Perfectly chosen place to show the road curve and hill in the background.

Great shot from a part of Africa that we don't see much of on TE, Eric (and not visted by many). The dirt road actually looks in quite good condition for that part of the continent. I hope if you were traveling on one of these you managed to get a seat next to the driver, and not on top. Cheers . . . David
