Photographer’s Note

The Lake Assal has 2 main particularities.
First, the level of the water is under the sea level, roughly 80 meters (which makes it one of the only places where the french pilots can claim flying their planes under the sea level).
Secondly, the water of the lake comes from the close Ghoubet El-Kharab, an almost inner sea linked to the red Sea, and the amount of salt in that water is really high. So high that the lake sits on a deposit of salt several meters deep. That flat area on the right of the picture is not sand, it's salt.
Some of the mountain top you see in the background are actually volcanos.

This was taken just before beginning a march when I spent some time in the French army over there.
I took this picture with a snapshot camera, I didn't want to risk my real camera.

Nicolas, je suis vivement impressionné, non par la qualité de la photo elle-même (vous avez fait ce que vous avez pu avec la caméra discutable à votre disposition), mais par la qualité de l'explication.
Si la République entraîne ses soldats dans des endroits semblables... je ne suis pas inquiet pour elle. Je préférerais marcher au Pôle Sud.

This is another one of your masterpieces , the colors are very nice but I noticed a little red streak in the upper left hand corner . What is it?
Did you do any photo editing because you did a wonderful job .
