Photographer's Note
What visit to Egypt would be complete without a photo of the enigmatic Sphinx? They close sharp at 5 pm, which is a pity as the light is still very hard and the heatwave in late May made touring outside uncomfortable (45c). I arrived at 5 pm and had to bribe my way in for a quick photo after closing hours. Main gates shut about 7 pm but there is a separate entry compound for this enormous statue. A portion of the pyramids at far left can be seen.

Hello Chris,
Ancient monument with its impressive mason's work from back in time, and I only guess you had to consider the light and angle for this POV.
most times we see a frontal perspective - here we can realize the valley with other monuments in front of the Sphinx.
Fine picture, contrast from yellow/brown to blue sky.
Have a nice Sunday,
ike

Hello Chris,
When I was there in the seventies the Sphinx was surrounded by railings and no access was allowed. The image is very well composed and benefits from superb colour contrasts. Excellent clarity from back to front. A small amount of baksheesh goes a long way in Egypt.

Hi Chris
I didn't realise it was so difficult to take a photo of this iconic site and that the rules of entry were so regimented. These places are best admired in the evening and early morning, at sunset and sunrise...
Well done on bribing the guards and getting this. The combination of light and shadow makes it special.
Best wishes
Kasia

Bonjour Chris,
L'étendue de l'endroit donne de la profondeur à la composition. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails du Sphinx et d'une partie de la pyramide. La qualité de la lumière embellit les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journée.

Hello Chris,
You have chosen an unusual angle for the Sphinx but it works extremely well. Your composition makes the ancient monument appear alert, scanning the desert. I cannot think of a previous photograph that has made me consider the aspect of the Sphinx, rather than just identifying its iconic shape and its position near the pyramids.
Only the skill of the photographer can make a viewer see a well known feature in a new way.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Bonjour Chris,
C'est un endroit que j'aurais beaucoup aimé visiter, mais à cause de la politique actuelle dans le pays, je crois bien que je vais me contenter de voir tes belles photos.

Hello Chris, a very weathered Sphinx, but instantly recognisable.I naively thought that one would be able to see this quite easily, not having to enter a special compound.
Excellent sharp quality.
I like the composition where we are able to see just what the Sphinx can see every day!
Regards Jean.

Hello Chris, You had to bribe your way but at least you had the Sphinx all for yourself, without the herds of tourists and touts. But maybe now there are not so many people there. I would be afraid to go to Egypt. Magnificent picture.

Hello Chris,
Great photo of the famous sphinx. It is so sharp and I love the contrast between the yellow colours and the blue sky. I really like the way you allowed so much space to the right of the sphinx. Very well done!

Hi Chris, not easy to take a pic of sphink wiht no one inside, this is great! Maybe the effect of terrorism and the difficult moment fo the tourism there, but it's still a lovely shot,i like it! Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hi Chris
I guess coming to this sight is probably on the bucket list for so many people right? How was it in person for the first time? did it live up to expectation? I ask because sometimes it can be a let-down.
of course, the combination of yellows and blues work well, its so naturally attractive. Good on you to get back in to capture this scene without people around - was that your goal? so much mystery with these subjects, looks great.
cheers

Hello Chris,
Yes, the pyramid looks like the Sphinx's hunchback. I like this POV. One of these years, we'll gather the courage to go to Egypt.

MT
