Photographer’s Note
Eritrea is one of the poorer countires in the world. At present it relies a great deal on aid from the UN etc. to help the economy grow.
This is taken from a market in the capital, Asmara. I was there at New Year in 2003. It was only my second trip out of Sudan. I was so shocked by this stall - so much more variety than in Khartoum. It was like a palace banquet. Who would have thought cabbages would ever look so tasty!
Asmara is at altitude, hence the coats. A few hours after this shot the mist rolled in and I got stuck outside the airport - nearly getting hypothermia. Luckily the Saomoan friend I was travelling with saved my bacon by staying up all night to keep me warm and awake. It was a lucky escape, though I ended up in bed for week afterwards.

I like the angle you've chosen. A very good picture because of the colors too. The different patterns are very well-seen too.

Very interesting and colorful market shot, Tom. The different kinds of produce make a delightful array of patterns in your shot, and yes the cabbages look tasty. I also like the repetition from the "retractable roofs" at the top, and of course the two women are an excellent part of this scene as well. Quite a story to go with this picture ... glad to learn that given the circumstances one can say it ended well ...

I like markets and your picture is very attractive with beautiful coloured fruits. Covers in the top of the image look like sails of boats.

I love this shot Tom - all that colour and variety in the market produce, the canvas awnings, the wooden crates, the two women - it all adds up to an interesting and well composed shot. Glad you survived the cold!

Great market shot, Tom. The curtains make a nice frame across the top. I might crop a bit off the top to take out the rod in the right top corner. While I was at it, I'd crop the left side just a hair to take out the white bag.

Hi Tom,
Colorful shot, with a nice disposition of fruit and vegetables. The two ladies add interest to the scene.

Hi Tom,
Your produce market was featured in destinations so that's how I noticed it - uh, oh I just noticed that it's a very old post.
The produce is indeed lush and beautiful; it says to me that perhaps Eritrea has the potential to be prosperous. I had a dear friend that talked to me a lot about the fighting there

Hello Tom,
The thumbnail looked like a pretty colorful stamp and when I looked at it, Found out that it is indeed pretty and colorful. The vegetables and fruits look like small dots painted on canvas and this is the point of this shot, which bears the adorable effect. It is such a usual sight from our daily lives but how you presented it into such an interestinh and charming one is beyond words.
