A simple picture taken in the capital city, Asmara. The city is full of Italian influences. Under the control of Mussolini Eritrea (then part of Abasynnia with Ethiopia) was the focus of much of the facist dictator's attention. He hoped to make Eritrea the 'African Riviera'. Hence Asmara is full of wonderful Art Deco inspired architecture. Luckily in the struggle for indepedence Asmara was surrendered by the Ethiopian army without a fight so much of the architecture is still standing, although a little run down.

This is the main avenue, Independence Avenue. It's a wonderful place lined with Italian style cafes and shoe shops (more Italian influence there!). During the latter part of the year it often becomes crowded on a weekend when cycling races are held. People gather to watch from every vantage point - cycling is a very popular sport in Eritrea.
