Red Sea landscape Photo

Photographer’s Note

I dedidcate this one to Peter Phoeberinger for all the help he has given me on photography in general and before buying my new D-80 toy.!! Obrigado meu irmao !!!

It took about three hours to reach one of the few igneous Islands of the Dhalak Archipielago in The Red Sea. The relative big boat marched slowly, we where 19 friends all from the international community working in Asmara plus a crew of three . The heat was was HOT!! Dolphins where following us, the beers where cold and the mood on top. Finally I was getting out of Asmara, my office and the cocktail parties!!

The Dhalak archipielago is an unknown paradise for most of frequent travellers and backpackers. Located near Eritrea and infront of Yemen and also one of the most amazing coral reefs in the world. Few people knows about it, of course how many travellers comes to Eritrea a year? I can gurantee you that they are not many.

The geology of the archipielago is uplifted old corals (I am not able to date them but I will try to find this information), this particular island, Disei, is a mixture of coral deposits from old eras intruded by dykes or veins of igneous rocks. It is interesting as I also saw metamorphic rocks as well...but of course the Red Sea is divergent zone or boundary, this phenomena for those not familiar with the geological terminology occur where two tectonic plates slide apart from each other. I.e. Africa and South America 250 million years ago as a result of an active Mid-ocean ridges or active zones of rifting (such as the very African Great Rift Valley where the archielago is located) are both examples of divergent boundaries.

The beauty of the island is awesome, is like beeing in the moon, it is another world. I strongly recommend those braves backpackers to get themselfes to Massawa and follow the lonely planet!!

Rolando parece que este lugar fue un lago hace mucho tiempo. Me gusta el color de la tierra y la soledad presente. Las plantas en el suelo sin embargo, dan idea que vida existe en este lugar tan desolado. Gracias.

Hi Rolando,
I think it is very interesting to see the landscape of so exotic for us island, but in my opinion the photo isn't well composed... I'm not sure what was the main motive here: the tufts of grass in the foreground or the hills in the background? I would move the frame to the left towards absorbing facture of the hill and small trees for example... something what aid to focus eyes...
Good aspects of this photo are both: the light and colours. Excellent, useful note.

Vi na tua nota que és geólogo. Eu também sou mas trabalho na pesquisa de hidrocarbonetos. Estou neste momento a fazer um poço na Ilha de Madura, na Indonésia.
Quanto à foto, está muito bonita. Talvez tivesse ficado melhor com uma pessoa a dar um sentido de escala.

Rolando,
que aventura sensacional para chegar a este local tao isolado e belo. As aparencias enganam mas tem uma certa semelhanca com "Death Valley". Composicao impecavel com estes pequenos arbustos a frente e a luz da um ambiente muito apropriado assim como cores muito belas.
Parabens pela sua camera nova e muito obrigado pela dedicacao. Estamos ai para ajudar um ao outro.

Hi Rolando,

It is a stunning place .. a beautiful meditative starkness amplified by your point of view and composition. It feels a little blurry or like it needs more sharpness .. especially in the distant hills .. still a very wondrous image.

this land is too immense to walk or wander. At fisrt This land seemed as if a flat desert. but I realized this land has a few hills. I wonder so much. I don't know something about Eritre. I hope that after you had been on the hill, you took the photographs this district. In my opinion, everybody has to visit the Africa continent to see and meet different countrys and different nature.
