Photographer’s Note
In October of 2003 I made an (insane) road trip from Khartoum to Gonder in Ethiopia. I was only in the north of Ethiopia for 4 days, seeing Gonder and Bah-Dar on Lake Tana. But it has cast a spell over me - so much so I'll be going back sometime next year for at least a month.
Living in Sudan one appreciates Ethiopia all the more. The mountains are a shock after the flat landscape of eastern Sudan, the green fields are lovely after so much scrub desert and the people are different in every way. You can also drink beer - crossing over the border at Galabat/Metema the first stop after immigration is a mud hut beer shop - wonderful.
This picture was taken with my little Ricoh from a car as we made a huge drive from the border to Gonder. The sun was disappearing fast, hence the light. It gives a little impression of the hamlets that cling to the road. It's certainly not artstic, but it's personally memorable.
I would add, if you have ever thought about going to Ethiopia, then do it. It's a little secret in Africa.

Since you seem unsure of the technical virtues of this pic, let me say that the light is excellent, and it has an interesting subject. It's not chocolate-box pretty and perfect, but that adds to the authenticity. If you do go back, make a travelogue out of it - make sure to get that beer hut!

Anothe one brilliant photo Tom,
Very unusually place for me, but I guess not for the folks who live there. A little boy with his cattle, standing in front of the houses gives a depth on the pfoto. Even made from the car this shot is wonderful.
All the best,
Deyan
