[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
Lalilbela, in northern Ethiopia, is famous for its churches carved out of living rock in the XII century. As we walked around, at practically every church a priest came to the door, dressed in fine robes and carrying a cross, and would not move until we had taken a picture and made a donation (even 10 cents was enough).

So I have lots of priest-and-cross photos, but this one I find particularly fascinating because of the stern, yet distant, expression on the priest's face. The eyes seem to burn into you even as they look past you, while the shadows behind him magnify the mystery.

Technical: Slight use of Curves to work on the midtones. I thought about cropping out the curtain on lower left, but I decided it does frame the shadows and that without it, the figure would be somewhat disembodied.

This is a beautiful portrait and the light levels are superb. Normally I like people not looking at the camera but here his gazed is one of the attractions

Simon

All is said in the note! What else?!
TFS this very great shot Daniel, alain

Tout est dit dans la note! Quoi d'autre?! Merci pour très beau cliché Daniel, alain

Hi Dan,
The varying cultures and diversity of Ethiopia are fascinating to me. I have met a lot of people from that part of the world, but it still remains a little mysterious to me. This photo captures the beauty and mystery of Ethiopia to me. Excellent composition and great note too.
Thank you for this one,
Sarah

Hi Daniel,
I like the way you captured this priest in his full robe ... very distinguish pose. Good portrait shot in vertical format ... image quality is very good too. Well done! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

Hello Daniel,

This is quite simply the finest photograph I've hitherto seen in your gallery. The man exudes pride and confidence, set against a black backdrop, there is nothing to distract. The sliver of a brown on the lower left, is actually essential. It has the same function as the right edge of the frame in Vermeer's Woman Holding a Balance. It proves a boundary. Moreover, you've placed the subject's right eye very close to vertical centerline, a la Rembrandt Old Rabbi in the Hermitage. The composition, colors and definition are all first rate. I am glad you had your D-70 last year when you made the spectacular photo, which I intend to place among my favorits — as soon as I make some room.

Warm regards,

Bulent

very impressive. Light is perfectly managed here. Colors are beautiful, this man is beautiful.

This is a beautiful portrait, nice lighting, great shot.

Hi Daniel,
I like the lovely natural light illuminating him from the side. Beautiful details on his clothing and cross. A wonderful expressive portrait. Indeed his eyes do seem to look right into one. Very well captured.
Regards
Wanda

Great portret of this priest.
He is coming out of the dark and that mystifies him.
The light that fals on the blue and red dress is magnificent.
TFS!

Hi Daniel, this is why i love TE : that permits to travel without moving from my chair and here this one is so exotic, so remote from our occidental developped countries life !
Thanks to share such a wondering picture, beautiful one, a great portrait

Hi Dan!
This is a wonderful photograph of the priest. The light in this picture is fantastic given it a three dimensional impression. I like that you have a dark almost black background the priest and his colorful dress really stands out! Sharpness and catch light in the eyes is drawing the viewer’s attention to the face.
Best regards from
Jan-Olof
