These Samburu men take a break from raising their livestock to play a mancala game.
Mancala is a 'sowing' game for 2 players and is played throughout Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Caribbean on pitted boards with pebbles or seeds. Its origin is uncertain but it may date back 3000years ago to Ancient Egypt.
The rules of Mancala are simple but it has many tactical possibilities. Each of the players owns the row of pits in front of them and equal numbers of pebbles (say 4-6) are placed in the pits. The first player picks up all the pebbles from one of his pits and 'sows' them by placing one pebble in each pit in an anti-clockwise direction. If there are pebbles in his final pit he claims these and continues on and so his turn may include several laps. It is only when his last pebble falls in an empty pit that his opponent begins sowing. The object is to claim more pebbles than your opponent. |

Hello Marlene,
Composition, lighting, colors and the diagonal created by the game board are excellent. I see the men have an audience watching them play the game. Your note explainig the game is so interesting. This is a great cultutal package!
Warm wishes,
Betty
Ciao Marlene, very nice shot.

hi Marlene
Very interesting daily life scene of locals having a game of play. The type of daily wear is more interesting to make this shot such a unique photo.
tfs, bill
Hi Marlene -
Im glad you captured some Kenyans playing this game :)
I used to play it many years ago - it's nice to see it being played here where it all began. The 2 men are well framed in this interesting shot.
Cheers,
Dave
Hi Marlene, I think that the subject is nice and interesting but the skins are so dark that we cannot see well their expressions so as an exercice, I tried a little WS and I hope that you'll like it. Otherwise, I like this tight frame, it's a friendly photo !
TFS,
Cath.
Marlene:
your shot [+ note] communicates a culture. Your frame shows more than a pitted-wood-pebbles game. I see the way the players like to sit and how the non-players stand. I see fashion, with the left player’s haircut, the right player’s bracelets, the fabric colors, and the fact that all of them are wearing the same sandal! I love it ….thanx 4 sharing
