[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
At 5 AM on New Year's Day, I was out with a camera ("All photographers are mad"). I couldn't go as far as I wanted because the guard told me there was a lioness out there hunting. I shot two full rolls of Kodachrome of the sunrise from the gates of the compound, and 3 different professional labs in New York, the ones who work for ad agencies, tried to make an accurate print from the 5 best slides; none of them could get it right.

So this is the digitized version; a little better, I think, but still lacks something of the glory of that morning.

(I was lucky to get this shot in more ways than one. By 9 AM, dust had obscured the mountain. In fact, in the year and some months I lived in Kenya, I only saw Kilimanjaro clearly once, from the air.)

Technical: Scanned by ScanCafe, which for some reason did not clean the slide first, so I had to clone lots of shmutz. Noiseware reduction (not perfect, but any more would have smoothed out too many details). Brushwork to lighten the snow on the mountaintop - this was 20 years ago, and there was that much snow back then. More brushwork to darken the sunrise colors.

Hi Daniel,
congratulations for this masterpiece of tranquillity, and also for your hike. Must be a fascinating place to see..
Compliments Christian

Though the quality is not at its best, the minimalism is this shot is what attract me most, with the very small detail of the peak covered with glazier and the sky. Still a very good shot Daniel.
Regards
Albert

Almost a year ago, I was stanging up there, at 5895 meters above the sea level, so it´s very moving for me this image. The colors of Africa giving light to the big mountain, with much more snow I found. Congratulations.

A great way to begin a year!!. I suppose it was difficult to take because the light, anyway it is a good picture. Yes it is not the best quality, but image reflects a moment full of silence and serene, I´m sure.
Thanks foir sharing.
Manuel.

Hi Daniel,
Awesome composition, keeping so much of the horizon in frame. Like the colors too. Scanning didn't spoil the quality in my opinion.
Have a great memorial day weekend,
SHaeri

hello Dan,
right now I'm looking at the laptop screen that usually amplifies any techical problems a photo might have, like noise and artifacts, but this shot is smooth and clean with beautiful soft pastel colours, I like it a lot. I also like that you have left a lot of room for the mountain, the composition creates a nice feeling of wide open space. very nice work.

with best regards,
Kristine

hello daniel

another dream-destination of mine... mt. klimanjaro... lucky man, you, dan! :)) i agree with avene, the post seems smooth 'as baby's bottom': not a specle, not a pixel of noise anywhere in the sky. impressive, especially given the fact you scanned it. interesting color. due to it the shot has almost some 'nordic' feel, at least for me...
