Photographer’s Note

I find that markets are very representative of life and habits of the country's they're at. I allways look for them, when travelling and specially in poorer countries, where life takes place mainly outdoors. These places help you to get a feeling of the place and culture. It's also a thrill to my wife, finding diferent fruits and other kinds of strange food that we have never seen or tasted before.

This is taken in the coast of Kenya, north of Mombaça. They do not use scales. Everything is sold by volume or portions, as you can see in the photo.

This is a scanned image from the negative, which had a line on the upper half, that I didn't know how to get rid off. The foreground is a bit overexposed - white grain and african sun combined - but what I like about this photo is the contrast between light and shadow.
