Karatina is a town on the main north road from Nairobi to the Mount Kenya region and Ethiopia beyond. It is mainly a shopping town; we used to go there sometimes for fresh produce and the Uchumi supermarket, although the chain went bankrupt and had to close the Karatina branch. Lots of electronic stores and a decent butcher shop, too. It also has one of the larger outdoor markets in East Africa. (The Merkato in Addis Ababa claims to be the biggest.) It sprawls along the railroad tracks, which is perfectly safe, since there are only two trains a week. Most of the stores - shacks, really - sell "mitumba" (secondhand clothes), which can come from all over the world, and this leads to disconcerting glimpses of people wearing, for example, Grand Canyon sweat shirts when they have clearly never been there and probably have no idea what it is.
But one can find a lot of other things here (though not the Kalashnikovs rumored to be for sale at the Merkato), including secondhand school books, which is what this father is buying for his daughter, who is dressed in a secondary school uniform.
Technical: Noiseware, some Shadow/Highlight work to intensify the colors, a little cropping, and finally Levels to set the overall tone. |

This is an interesting photo with lots of details. From the obvious focal point, the man and his daughter in the foreground, my eyes are automatically drawn into the crowd in various directions. The colours are fine and your handling of the light is excellent.
