Kitui is a town of about 10,000, three hours east of Nairobi. It is where the Peace Corps now trains its Kenyan volunteers, being more or less representative of the kind of setting where we were going to be placed. So while it is not a typical tourist site, it is typical of much of Kenya.
When we were there, this part of Kenya was suffering through a 3-year drought. (It rained the following month, heavily but perhaps not heavily enough.) The area where we were living had enough food, but north of town they were having a lot of trouble. These women are hauling heavy sacks (50 kilos, I believe) of relief food, probably flour, back to their homes. |
