As part of a Peace Corps job, we went out to a farm outside (and by outside I mean an hour's walk from town) Kianyaga to meet with Jadiel and his family, who were converting their farm from coffee to bee-keeping and macademia nuts. Jadiel was starting a project to help the local, unemployed, youth get involved with the bee-keeping, so that they would, as he put it, have something to do instead of sitting around getting drunk and getting AIDS. He wanted the Peace Corps' help in writing a grant proposal, which was one of the things that Jean did. So we went to visit him, see his farm, and have lunch - at which time I took this picture.
I didn't like traveling around rural Kenya with my Nikon, which was worth a year's wages to some Kenyans, so I used my wife's Canon Powershot, the sort of camera everyone there expects to see.
Technical: Crop, then Levels to highten the midtones. Noiseware at medium (too much and the details get blurry), followed by some toying with Brightness/Contrast and Shadow/Highlights. |

hello daniel
a nice environmental portrait with an interesting background story. it seems, the light conditions were rather hard, so - a good job given that. i noticed you have done some levels adjustment in postprocessing. to me, it appears to have flattened the image quite a bit. i wonder if slight curves adjustment (steepening the general curve) on top of what you did in levels could remedy that. usually it does the trick.
warm regards,
kristaps
ps. i did a little workshop today. hope you do not mind.
