Another pic from Marrakech Tanneries ....

Tanning in ancient history was considered a noxious or "odiferous trade" and relegated to the outskirts of town, amongst the poor. Indeed, tanning by ancient methods is so foul smelling that tanneries are usually still isolated from those towns today where the old methods are used.
The infamous tanneries in Marrakech can give you an insight into all these methods of tanning skins.
Reams of cow hide are treated in huge vats of dyes – whose main active ingredient just happens to be pigeon droppings.
Fortunately our guide in the tanneries gave us a bunch of fresh mint to ward off the stench:)
