This are the types of scenes I imagine whenever I think of the desert. Beautiful composition with the riders right in the middle of the image. The texture of the sand and the good colours add so much to the image. Well composed picture and a beautiful place. Thanks Henk.

Mooooi zeg! Vooral de lange schaduwen en het warme licht zijn prachtig. Het tafereel natuurlijk ook en doet me denken aan mijn eigen komende reis met kamelen :-)))
Grasjes aan de onderkant vind ik niet zo mooi ... :-(

Sure, it's been done many times before, but so what?
This is very well taken Henk, and I like how you've filled the foreground with those long shadows. Waiting a couple of moments until they had passed the areas of scrabby grass would have resulted in a cleaner image, but maybe there was even more of it out of frame to the left and that wasn't possible.
The low-angled light has brought out all the textures and given good modelling to the shapely sand dunes.

I love the sand movement at the camel owner's foot and his body, showing the effort he puts . The color of the sand really tells me how fine and smooth it is.

Hoi Henk,

Hoe krijg je ze toch altijd weer voor elkaar!! Ja, film kan ook heel mooi zijn. Wat voor een negatief scanner gebruik je?
Vind het vooral mooi hoe de guide door het midden heen van de foto heen is. Het lijkt alsof ie die kamelen door de foto heen wilt slepen.
Denk dat je zo'n foto groot moet zien! 800 pixels doet het geen eer aan. Ik vind nu dat die bovenste duin wat erg licht is op de top. Maar dat ziet er groter heel anders uit. Dan is het verloop in kleur en daarmee het contrast heel anders.
Mooie plaat!

This reminds me of one of those aerial photos by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. I'm sure you know the ones.
Your wait on top of the sand dune paid off here. The low sun has a magical effect on the dunes but add to it the mini-camel train and you have a real winner. Those long shadows are fantastic. I see it is a scan too! Very well done

Hi Henk,

You got yourself a ringside seat, a fabulous point of view where it almost look like you’re in an helicopter! The sun and dunes provided the perfect combo to achieve some superb shadows.

The colours are good, even though you were shooting against the light: Instead of obtaining silhouettes, there are plenty of details on your subjects. Great details, like ripples on the sand in the back of camels.

I just can't imagine living in such harsh climates such as this. It seems it would be a struggle each day. Although, it seems to be good for photography the dunes are so smooth and rich with color and the shadows are awesome. I once saw a picture similar to this in National Geographic, very well done.

Instant classic! The image of the camel riders in the dunes is very powerful, and this is a great example. What makes this one even more special is the lighting, coming from the side and showing the texture of the dune surface very well. Also, we see their shadows, which adds another element. Excellent work!

I've seen similar images before but the quality of this one is excellent. You expertly included the whole of the shadows, the low angled light gives good modelling to the sand forms and highlights nicely parts of the front camel, and the whole atmosphere is awe-inspiring. A wonderful shot.

Henk, you did well with your choice in staying on the ground. Getting the camels and the looooong shadows is much more excitment than balancing yourself on top of such creature. The light conditions are perfect and just examplifies your'e patience and knowledge to wait for the right moment.

One of those photos that makes me sit and stare at for a long time. Congratulations to you Henk on this frame. Gives me that inspiring 'cinematic' feel. I do agree seeing more of this view, the vast sanddunes and camel swiftly passing across. I have no bad things to say here. The composition is superb, POV makes a good angle viewing the subject's shadow down to the smooth textures of the sand. Splendid shot as always!

Dag, Henk. De opeenvolging van duinen geeft een zeer goede diepte aan het beeld. Wat mij het meest aanspreekt hier is wel de schaduw van de kamelen die zo lang is en laat ons begrijpen dat de zon zeer laag is. De groep is uitstekend geplaatst in de compositie.

Hello Henk, this photo is absolute winner. Through my presence here on TE I've learnt that we all want to dream about exotic and far places. One of the proven ways and photos is desert with camels. Your shot is absolutely fantastic and real treasure. I wonder why did you keep it hidden for so long!! The only thing I am not really sure about is the front grass but I understand you could not crop it as it would touch part of the shadows too. Hi Henk,
Once again, you take a classic shot and refine it to perfection. The first think that struck me is the wonderful detail in the sand makes me feel like I could reach out and touch it. Then you frame the three men on the middle of three dunes and you capture complete shadows even though their length mad it difficult and all in the brief time that everything was perfect. Wow, an old film shot. It's nice to see some of your older work again, not that 2004 is very old, but you know what I mean. This reminds me of the photo I have posted of some tourists riding horses in Yellowstone, except this is of camels in the desert, and the this shot has way better lighting :) I love those shadows.

There is something special about these images of camels in the desert. The shadows you have capture are fabulous, the colour of the sand is especially nice too. I like too that it is still light enough to see the colour of the peoples clothing. Excellent.

What a wonderful light you have on this one and such a great composition. Every single millimeter of this image is studied carefuly and at its right position. Provia does it best in these condition and I hope I will have some good ones of Guadalupe where I used the same film.

Hi, Henk -

The view from a camel can be nice, too. We took an overnight trip into Erg Chebbi by camel, and I got some great photos the next morning. But, yes, it is a touristy thing to do. And you captured that spirit very nicely here, with the camel walker pulling the reluctant camel along. Most of the color comes from the tourists, which probably says something there.
