Still Life with Roses Dates and Figs
 |
|
| [Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe |
In Marrakech we stayed at a riyad (a small hotel) in the medina. Each room was decorated with roses, and there was a fruit offering, dates and figs, as a welcome gesture. I looked at this arrangement and realized it would make an interesting still life when the light was right.
So I came back in mid-afternoon when the sun was coming through the door, arranged all the pieces, and took several photos in RAW. I wanted the three flowers in this position - full sun, half sun and full shadow - but it meant some complications in post-processing, as the full sun rose is overly bright. The white dish also reflected the strong aunlight. So the challenge became how to reduce the burnout while still keeping the feeling of the Moroccan sun.
Technical: I tried a number of things, and I don't remember everything I did that got this result. But basically, I used Adobe Camera Raw to increase the temperature, creating a warmer overall image. Then I selected the brightest spots in the main rose and reduced the glare by using Shadow/Highlight and Levels. Similarly, I selected the bowl of fruit and reduced the glare on it the same way. Finally, I converted from RGB to CMYK mode and back to RGB, which is a technique I use to make sure nothing is out of gamut, but in this case it also had the effect of muting some of the colors. All of this had to be done so as to keep the back rose still visible but heavily shadowed. Minor cropping to make it a standard 11x14. |

Hi Daniel
Good still life shot. Almsot like a painting. I also like your detailed note about the post processing. Helps me learn a few new things that I havent tried before.
I think you have achieved your desired effect here with the sun and the shadows.
Cheers
Vivek
