Ass-Backwards

| [Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe |
Volubilis, the ancient Roman city in what is now Morocco, was for many years home to some extremely wealthy Roman citizens, who decorated their homes with fantastic mosaics, many of which still survive even after centuries of exposure to the elements. There are a number of mosaics of famous athletes (somewhat in the same spirit that now moves us to hang posters of Michael Jordan), but this one is intended to poke fun at them. It shows an athlete, holding up a trophy he's just won - and riding backwards on, well, let's call it an ass.
Other mosaics were more serious, and better made - see the workshop - but this one, like some of the ones in Pompeii, show Rome's occasionally vicious taste for satire.
Technical: Some use of Levels to strengthen the colors. |

Hello Dan,
I like this image of the Roman tiles in Volubilis. It's a wonderful parody, and although I've seen countless humorous tile decorations, I had not seen this one before. I'm writing from my office where I don't have photoshop, but you could reduce the convergence with distance (one-point perspective), and make it more flat. I think it would more dramatic. You work in the edit function: copy and paste this image onto a larger canvas, then select the present rectangle, and it "transform" choose, "perspective." then simply stretch out the top part. Take a look at Bargello Door. This is the end result of the transform. Then look at the ws I did to show the original image.
Warm regards, (Must get to class) It is 1::00 pm in the East.)
