Man From Meknes
Wandering through the streets of Meknes...
Saw the old man sitting on a stone bench. Tried to conversate with him in Arabic, but after a few words and a laugh the conversation stocked. He was willing to pose but he refused to look in the lens, which was okay by me...

Hello Henk,

This is a great image. You always seem to gather a collection of the most eclectic and culturally significant people. The expressions here are very well presented. Your refined clarity has offered a beautiful representation of his complexion. The colours hold a good strength and the pale BG is such that is does not detract from the face.

Matthew

Hello Henk
Nice portrait of this old men...
Good work

Cheers,Braca

H: I think it's a fine portrait, but as you know, I prefer all mine with environmental context when possible. Standard N. Afican non-stare. What's up with the 1n RS? regards, c

Hello Henk,

What a glance ! What a concentration ! I like much the texture of the skin that you returned very well. The glance is directed towards an unknown place which forces us to ask us questions! The colors are very beautiful and the clothes of this person gives a very folk air to this photography! That me recall some passages of Tintin and Carbe with the gold grips !
Well done !

hi henk

Salaam Henk,
That's fine to me too that he did not look into the lens, like aged persons this man has lots of dignity in his attitude, nice portrait as usual, if I just have to mention one detail his shoulder on the left of the phto is a bit blurred already and I'd prefer it sharp. Scan quality looks superb, do you have your own scanner or have it done by a lab ?
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

The detail and clarity is incredible; it's almost as if he is there to touch. We can see the texture in his clothing as well every detail in his face. I think I prefer that he is not looking at the camera; it seems more natutal and unposed. Excellent!

Hi Henk,

You know that I'm learning a lot with you about how to do a great portrait...but you don't need to explain anything...we can take advantage only seeing how you manage light, pov, colors, dof, etc, etc. Let me only say one thing: you keep posting that please? Thanks for sharing!

Hi Henk. A masterful portrait, immaculate details and colour. The light shines on the subject and comes from within, revealing a strong personality. Obviously someone who takes care of his appearance and has the means to do so. Regards. Klaudio.

Hi Henk,

You most have one of the most interesting collection of portraits on TE... what do you have on the vault that nobody has seen? Each one of these portraits are the pure reflection of culture... may I suggest that you do a show and collect cultures?
Cheers, my friend.

salut Flodyan,

Dag, Henk.

John.

Henk,
finally I will be the first to comment on one of your pictures. Again one of those formidable portraits that I just can see in ytour galery. I always have the impression that you have such an extraordinary sensitivity to capture up close moments. The people that you shoot (photographically speaking) are so alive. It seems that the man will jump at any second through my screen and I can start with an interesting conversation.
Cheers, Peter

het is een zeer fraaie foto Henk.
dit portret zou de familie zelf ook wel in huis willen hebben denk ik zo... zeer goede kwaliteit, mooi fotowerk. prettige avond.

Hallo Henk,
impressive face well drawn on paper and now on digital. In my eyes this profil from the diagonal (doesn't find a translation for the German "Halbprofil") is more impressive than one direct in his eyes. The lines of his skin have now a good expression but he doesn't look really glad in any way.
Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Hi Henk,
A nice expressive portrait of this man, I like his features which you have captured so nicely, and the detail on his clothing and hat. I am thinking about making Morocco my next destination, did you enjoy it when you went there?

Another superb portrait Henk.
Very well captured with the expression of an old man but with strong character and personality. Very good colors and details, very neat image for a scanned photo. The tight frame goes very well with your composition. Excellent shot.
Well done.
Abrazos.

hello Henk
this is a beautiful portrait, superbly framed!I often think it's better when the people don't look to the lens,it's more natural! Here,I like the pensive expression of the man!The DOF is perfect,I like to see only the face in such photos! The colours are really beautiful, and there is an incredible sharpness,we can see very well the texture of the skin and small details of the clothes.I like this picture vey much!
Kind regards.

Hi Henk.

Another great portrait! Excellent colours and sharpness...as usual!

Rgs, Oscar

Everything a portrait should be, Henk. This dignified man looks unposed and he looks away from your lens. The textures and details are incredible.

Hey Henk,

That could be one of the sharpest portraits I've seen from you. I can almost count his whiskers! Maybe some intentional Gaussian blur on his right shoulder? It really draws your focus to the ornate zipper on the front, the detailed lines on his face and his unique cap. This to me is one of your best portraits. I like it as much as your Cuban portraits which are my favorites.

Happy Holidays,

Mel

Henk,
Perfect portrait !
Mthis man's face alone tells so many stories... And his attitude is superb.
Amazing scanning job too, sharpness is so impressive... BEautiful,

JB.

Hoi Henk,

Bravo.

Wow, this is a fantastic portrait! The expression is the first thing that gets my attention, especially those eyes. This has a very impressive level of detail, which really adds to the sense of reality. It seems that we can see every hair and wrinkle. Excellent work!

So clear. It looks really sharp like a 3D image. Very nice exposure and good colors. Interesting perspective showing this guy wearing the hat which may be a typical one in Morroco. Well done. Sothy

Hi Henk,

Interesting note concerning the old man attitude towards his portrait being taken. It's says a lot about culture and self-perception, wether spontaneous and natural, casual and friendly, or reserved and camera shy.

So for me, the pose is a great reflection of your subject sociological conditionning, its way of living and its behavior with stranger. No need to look through the glass all the time, some portrait are more revealing without eye contact. His facial features, mustach and typical hat are interesting particularity of Moroccan of older generation.

Excellent portrait Henk!

André

You mean, like this one, Henk? Well, not from that village. That was my first village and I was not fully prepared for that fantastic opportunity. But I will show close-portraits from the next village...I will never reach this kind of high quality, but I hope to find some good enough to post. What is amazing in you, is that you have a wide range of variety in photography. You do everything, from portraits, landscapes, action shots, sports, I mean evetything, allways with a high pro level.
This one is fantastic. The texture on his coat, the wrinkles on his face...What can an amateur say to a PRO? Do you know Arabic? :))
Have a nice day,
ricardo

Hi Henk
This is classical portrait with a classical cropping. The light and the sharpness are wonderfull. The glance of this old man is the more interesting here.
Nice work as usual.

Hi Henk, I like the look of this happy old man a lot. Exquisite colours and light for a perfect portrait - a lot to learn!!! (me that is, not you!). Sabine
PS zie toch iets 'raar' aan de schouder van de meneer, een soort "wemeling" als dat Nederlands is. Maar het kunnen mijn ogen zijn, want ben wat moe!

Hello Henk,
I like this pose and for this particular gentleman. I think your portrait worked better with him looking away from the camera. This is a great portrait and I love the way that the layers of clothing, with all of the folds, and the converging lines on his hat, enhance the 3D effect of the composition. It looks like he can almost walk out of the frame. A direct pose (him looking at you) would have flattened his face too much for this particular portrait. Your portrait is growing on me the more that I look at it. Fabulous work again!
Stan

excelent portrait ,everytime i see one in your gallery i start hunting people for make one similar:D...never manage to do it:d

Hi Henk,
I agree with the comments that find the look into the distancer more dignified that a smile into the camera. Perfect DOF gives you detail where it counts with softening that minimizes the non-essential.

Merry christmas,

Much better that he didn't look straight into the lens. It's much more candid this way. Street portraits is something I have to practice on. Your initiating the rapport before photography is the right approach. Glad to see Provia doing well on skin colors. Happy new year!

Hello Henk -

I hope you and your lady friend had a nice Christmas - did St. Nick bring you a Nikon?

Even though the subject refused to look at the camera you have captured a spot on portrait. His gaze off to the left provides a lot interest in the subject as we see all of the weathered years in his face. The portrait has a 3D feel to it that may not have been so noticeable with a face on composition. There are no blocked up shadows and there is detail in the eyes all very important for a good portrait. Well done! You seem to have that knack!

Thank you for sharing.
