Located near Sossusvlei, Dead Vlei is an area that was once able to support vegetation. However, the ever changing sand dunes cut the area off from its water source and the trees died. Their remains are intact due to the dry air even though they are 500-1000 years old.

I took this picture from a neighbouring dune. You should see the light coloured 'heavy' sand/stones on the leeward side of the dune. They fall as the prevailing wind is from the left, the other sand particles are carried further by the wind. The dune is moving slowly down wind.
