Train of TransNamib near Swakopmund.

Namibia is a big country with sparse population. The only deep sea port is in Walvis Bay far away from the populated areas inland. Namibia has also some big mines. Thus rail transport is important for the economy. Railways were dieselised early, mainly because of shortage of water needed by steam engines.

Design looks American. If someone has more information of TransNamib diesels I'd be glad to know.

Kari,
this is a nice capture.I basically love trains and the Diesel is amazing on the desert sand. The pic has a bit of noise but it doesn't bring down the train's glamour.Great shot and thanks for sharing- Vikram

A brillant shot for the category transportation.

As per my knowledge, these are GE U20C Class 33-400 locomotives (from US indeed).

Good portrait of the train, good atmosphere, my compliments.

Hi Kari!
Oh, you've been in Namibia, it was very interesting, I suppose :) Good classical shot of desert railway. Although 3o-3o diesel loco has a bit unusual view. Well balanced. May be I'd like to make POV a bit upper to show the desert bihind the train. Anyway the shot is good and regards :)

Its a good lookingengine but the cropping is rather tight especially at the front and it is also a touch over exposed

Kari, an amazing photo of quite a unique object. Knowing their marine 'infrastructure', I am amazed that they have also some trains and rails :)
