Photographer's Note

This is the Grand mosque of Agadez, built of mud and straw in 1844 and still standing.
Agadez in northern Niger is a political and cultural centre for the Tuareg people and has been an important centre for the caravan trade across the Sahara since the Middle Ages.
In recent years the city has been rather off limits for tourists because of a Tuareg rebellion against the government of Niger. This picture was taken in December 1981, long before the Tuaregs took up their guns and long before al-Qaeda started roaming the desert.
Scanned from a Kodachrome slide.
