Photographer’s Note

Lac Rose ... but you could see the rose colours of the alga only when the sun shines and some ripples are seen on the water.

Wikipedia:
Lake Retba or Lac Rose lies north of the Cap Vert peninsula of Senegal, north east of Dakar.

It is so named for its pink waters, particularly visible during the dry season. The lake is also known for its high salt content, which, like that of the Dead Sea, allows people to float easily. The lake also has a small salt collecting industry and is often the finishing point of the Dakar Rally.

Many salt collectors work 6-7 hours a day in the lake, which has a salt content close to 40%. In order to protect their skin, they rub their skin with "Beurre de Karité" (shea butter, produced from shea nuts obtained from the Shea nut tree), which is an emollient to avoid the skin to burn.

The pink water makes a pretty and unusual image, but I'm not sure I would want to swim in it, although the WS show the shells on the lake bed so it must be fairly clear water. Well composed image with the sign and boats balancing each other well.

Trovo incredibili questi laghi colorati dalle alghe! ce ne sono anche da noi, in Italia, credo in Trentino! I nostri sonom circondati da floride vegetazioni e alberi giganteschi (abeti), qui invece il lago è sospeso nel vuoto! Questo lo rende molto affascinante e caratteristico come dimostra la tua bella foto!

Hi Achim,

The presence of the boats has an effect of scale. The point of view leads our eyes toward the opposite shore which is giving depth to the composition. The capture of the ripples are assets to the composition. The light has a good effect on the colors of the picture. Have a nice day.

Amazing colour of the water created by the algae. I saw a spicture from Brazil where the color of the sea water close to the coast was similar to the colour of coke. Like the compo. with the boats & the gate. A good informative note as well!

Des couleurs que l'on n'imagine pas trouver dans le milieu aquatique et pourtant voici un bel exemple de ce lac bien mis en valeur par ce cadrage complet incluant ce portique indicatif et ces 2 barques attendant d'être utlisée pour une balade.

Very impressive photograph of this pink lake. I had never heard of it although I lived in Dakar as a girl; but my parents never told me about it!
The composition is very good with the presence of these two flat boats on the shore, and the immensity of the lake which fades away into the horizon!
I like the rough sign-posting, but I am sorry about the litter that is probably omni-present around!
