Photographer's Note

The French conquest of Senegal started from 1659 with the establishment of Saint-Louis, Senegal, followed by the French capture of the island of Gorée from the Dutch in 1677, but would only become a full-scale campaign in the 19th century. French West Africa (French: Afrique occidentale française, AOF) was a federation of eight French colonial territories in Africa: Mauritania, Senegal, French Sudan (now Mali), French Guinea, Ivory Coast, Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), Dahomey (now Benin) and Niger. The capital of the federation was Dakar. The federation existed from 1895 until 1960. Until after the Second World War almost none of the Africans living in the colonies of France were citizens of France. Rather, they were "French subjects", lacking rights before the law, property ownership rights, rights to travel, dissent, or vote.
In January 1959, Senegal and the French Sudan merged to form the Mali Federation, which became fully independent on 20 June 1960. The transfer of power agreement with France was signed on 4 April 1960. Due to internal political difficulties, the Federation broke up on 20 August 1960. Senegal and Soudan (renamed the Republic of Mali) proclaimed independence. Léopold Senghor, internationally known poet, politician, and statesman, was elected Senegal's first president in August 1960.

Although Senegal has independent for many years, the French influence is visible everywhere. First - the official language is French (it is that I do not like, as I do not speak French), second - everywhere one can buy tasty fresh baguettes and the cheese La vache qui rit, third, as we can see here, Orange TM is present everywhere.

Here the picture from Mlomp. Mlomp is a rural community and village in the Ziguinchor Region of Senegal in the Casamance, situated approximately 40 km south-west of Ziguinchor.
Most inhabitants are of Diola ethnicity and speaking the Diola language, and many also speak the Ouolof language and French.
