When we visited South Africa this summer, we also visited Robben Island and the old prison there, best known for Mandela`s 18 year long stay here. Our guide had been a prisoner here himself, and communicated strong impressions from his time behind these walls. I can imagine how difficult it must have been. Maybe the small ray of light that hits the floor have been an inspiration in these, in many ways, dark surroundings.

This place is an impressive monument of the place South Africa’s greatest son had to stay for so many years. Your splendid picture illustrates the impact of these situation powerful.
Have a nice weekend.

I like this idea and excellent realisation! Good example of minimalist composition and perfect exposure! Thumbs up!

Hello Erling, How it must be interesting to hear the stories from former prisoner here. impressive and meaningful these sun rays in the darkness. Excellent light management.

Besides the beautiful composition, you managed to convey well the ambiance within these walls and bars, the light was very important for those inmates.
Must had been a moving experience there.
Best regards and a nice weekend,

A fantastic shot - the light from the window works very well, but the reflections turn this into something very special - it makes the floor look like it is covered in water (tears, waterboarding?). A very artistic impression of a place with quite an awful history. Very nice work, Iain

Une composition intéressante, bonne gestion de la lumière et des zones sombres.

You managed to make a great photo of this horrible place. The contrast and play of light and shadow makes it almost abstract. Scary to think what it was like a few decades ago.

Hi Erling,i thought immediatly to a prison before to read the note, and in effect this is what i thought. A very important one, where Mandela was many years ago,and a great capture, not easy to play so well with lights and shadows, original and useful post,i like it! Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano

What I like the most is the blue reflection on the ground mixed with the shadow of the window

This must be a very impressive place to visit with the history that took place here on your mind. The photo is impressive too with this dark prison cell. You captured the light very well.

The light was very well managed here! The darkness inside the prison gives it an interesting atmosphere, broken by the light marked by the grids! Perfect capture of this place! Wonderful job!

A powerful photo in which you've made breakthrough compelling use of the light. There is a hypnotic fascination to the way the light is bouncing around this dark place.

This is a dramatic photo, technically ideal for demonstrating one-point perspective. At a more profound and moral level, it is even more dramatic, the walls and bars serving to incarcerate one of the great men of our times.
