Taung is a railhead town, in the middle of nowhere, in an arid part of North-West Province. In the well-kept parts of town, the gardens have a look that seems inspired by Zen monks, in their raked-sand minimalism.
About 20 or 30 km from Taung, in a limestone quarry in the small town of Nerlim, the skull of the Taung Child, a massively important Australopithicus Africanus fossil was discovered in the mid 1920s.
The title comes from a line in the Jimi Hendrix composition "Red House".

This is a rather odd composition with a strange beauty. The trees are attractively shaped but look very out of place along with the intensely red and simple hut. This combination of seemingly unrelated elements have a surprising and rather dynamic effect, to which the rusty ground, the green field and the blue sky can be added. This composition is a real knockout.

Not a typical African scene, anyway I like it. Its desolate nature, the garbage next to the tiny shed reminds me to the outskirts of Miskolc, where I live. The not centred composition works well.

an unusual composition that works really well, the saturated colours are also very pleasing to me.

Beautiful photo, very well composed. I like the red of the house which stands out so brightly against the more natural colours of the fields and sky. The trees also make a very nice background and I like the calm mood which the pictures breathes.

We get an combination image of South Africa with wonderful trees and a old barrack as house..
A wonderful panorama about the area.
Sharpness and clarity are superb.
An excellent composition, very well done.

How amazing and well spotted with that vibrant colours set against a wonderful blue sky and no wonder it caught your eye. Good detail in this frame filling shot and fascinating trees nicely framing the 'red house' - quite reminiscent of a couple of bonsai trees. Amazing how they survive in dry harsh environment...
Love the whole color combination!!! Congrats

Hello Iain,an eye catching shot.
I like the composition with the red building to one side of the frame, backed by the interestingly shaped trees.
Excellent depth of field.

nice the view of this rustic place with the red barn to be the eye catching of the image. The line of the trees and the blue sky enhance even more the beauty of the scene as the contrast of the colours.
Have a good and healthy New Year to you and your family,Danos

I like the feathery textures of the tree tops and their graphism against the lighter toned bg. Good repetition of their patterns and shapes too. The red and blue colours set up a nice warm cold color contrast. Tfs!
