Photographer’s Note
We had just travelled over 1000 kms by train from Nyala in the east of Sudan and this is our first glimpse of the Blue Nile at Sennar.
A child looks on as one woman winnows and the other packs grain - probably sorghum.
A scan from a kodachrome slide.

That's a superb scan, Marlene, and the shot is really excellent and well exposed. The dynamics given by the action of the woman on the right is fascinating... I also like very much the inclusion of the woman on the left... well done, Daniel

Hi Marlene,
A very fine documentation of this area, which must have changed tremendously over the years. This is a very good picture and a very good scan. Very good colours!

hi Marlene
:) 1974! I wonder how many people have photos of that year and scan for upload on TE?
Very good daily life scene shown in this capture of Sudan and how life used to be then. Perhaps still the same today?
I think it is a wonderful experience to share your 1974 travel photos in this gallery. Surprisingly, the scan is good quality and your photography was good in 1974.
Great work!

Hello Marlene,
It's so interesting to see all these old pictures of yours, and contrary to my brother I think this place has probably hardly changed at all in 35 years. This one makes me remember the awful heat in the Sudanese desert, the burning hot winds. I like the inclusion of the woman to the left, although seing all of her would have been even better.
I am flattered that you mention me in your reply to trekks. However, I only started as a foreign news reporter in the 80's. In the 70's I was just a backpacker like you and so many others.
Kindest regards,
Gert

Hi Marlene,
excellent quality for a scanned image! And I like the moment of action which you captured (that woman working, on the right). But it looks so hot!
I am glad that here on TE I have an opportunity to look at rare and interesting photos taken in the past! Our life is not only the Present, it is also the Past :)
Warm regards,
Elena
PS. At last it has become warm in Moscow... but not so hot as in this photo ;)

A nice cultural capture from Sudan! The action on the right really makes this interesting.

very beautiful photo. I liked the pov but framing could be better if you had got to show the whole image of that people at left and the feet of that girl in the foreground. they are working and are very natural in the image. beautiful to see the nile in the Background

This scan is really great. The picture showing every day life is very interesting. I would like to see the women on the left side entirely, not only the half. Good that even with bright daylight your picture doesn't look overexposed.

pulezan
