Photographer’s Note
Bab el-Bahr at sunset
Bab el Bahr means gate to the sea, and in the 19th century, it was exactly that. Open grounds covered the area, leading to the lake of Tunis. When the French arrived, the Bab el Bahr became a symbol as the gateway between the Oriental part and the European part of Tunis. This is how it got its other name, Porte de France.
Just through the Sea Gate (Bab el Bahr), begins the modern city, or Ville Nouvelle, transversed by the grand Avenue Habib Bourguiba (often referred to by popular press and travel guides as "the Tunisian Champs-Élysées)", where the colonial-era buildings provide a clear contrast to smaller older structures.
Tunis
Tunis (Arabic: تونس, Tūnis) is the capital of the Tunisian Republic and also the Tunis Governorate, with a population of 1,200,000 in 2008. It is Tunisia's largest city.
Situated on a large Mediterranean gulf, (the Gulf of Tunis), behind the Lake of Tunis and the port of La Goulette (Halq al Wadi), the city extends along the coastal plain and the hills that surround it. At the centre of more modern development (colonial era and post) lies the old medina. Beyond this section lie the suburbs of Carthage, La Marsa, and Sidi Bou Said.
The medina is found at the centre of the city: a dense agglomeration of alleys and covered passages, full of intense scents and colours, boisterous and active trade, a surfeit of goods on offer ranging from leather to plastic, tin to the finest filigree, tourist souvenirs to the works of tiny crafts-shops.
As the capital city of the country Tunis is the center of Tunisian commercial activity, as well as focus of political and administrative life in the country. The expansion of the Tunisian economy in the last decades is reflected in the booming development of the outer city where one can see clearly the social challenges brought about by rapid modernization in Tunisia. Hello George!
I really like this photograph too! Lots of details all over the image but they're all quite harmoniously put together: architecture and urban daily life!
Sharpness, exposure, dof and colors are excellent!
TFS - congratulations!

Hi George
Another good one in your great series on Tunisia. The gate looks like a popular spot in the evening for both locals and tourists. Nicely taken with the evening shadows well displayed on the gate.
cheers

Hello George,
The people milling about and the attractive evening light make for a pleasing atmosphere in this interesting composition. The old gate makes a good contrast with the relatively modern architecture either side. Good colours and sharpness. Thanks for sharing.

Hello George
The red flags & backpacks contrast well against the blue sky, in addition to the yellow ochre buildings. Good sharpness & the people animate the scene. Tfs!
