The ancient city of Carthage lies just 20 minutes by tram away from the centre of Tunis. It has a rich history, firstly a powerful city founded by Phoenician colonists which rivalled Rome. It then was destroyed by the Romans but rebuilt to become one the Roman Empire's major cities, the ruins that survive today are those of the rebuilt city.
