Berber troglodyte in Matmata
Troglodyte - house which consist of a courtyard, 5 to 10 meters deep from which a labyrinth of small rooms are cut into the soft rock and interconnected by narrow passageways.
Essentially the Berbers were a nomadic people who roamed the lands of Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco.
As a means of protection against others who moved into their territories, the Berber tribes eventually established permanent villages. However, unlike the Berbers of Morocco and Algeria, the tribes in Tunisia had few high mountains in which to hide, so they integrated quickly with the Arab invaders.
The Berber villages are mainly in the Southern part of Tunisia.
Symbols above the doors were drawn because they considered it as a protection from bad luck or evil. You can see here the hand of Fatima - the fingers of the hand represent the five pillars of Islam. That's why it's called khamsa - it's the same as the Arabic word for five. The fish is a good luck charm. Both symbols are used to ward off the devil from their homes.

Imagine those paintings being discovered in 10,000 years time!
It is an excellent documentary shot from a way of life that we do not know much. I admire the light and the textures of your picture. By the way, what is that red stuff on bottom right?

Hello Snezana,
very interesting photo and the note to it! Very good colours and light management. The entrance to the house looks so dark that it seems as if thers's endless black emptiness behind it, inside! Frankly speaking, this dark hole looks a bit scary to me :) As if you enter it - and disappear forever!
I join Antonio and ask the same question: what's that red stuff??
best regards,
Elena

Zdravo Snezana. Humble little abode, but well looked after. The interior must me so cool in the afternoon heat. Lovely colours, details and light.Interesting information. Kako je bilo tamo putovati? Jeli si bila u grupi ili nezavisna?Pozdrav. Klaudio.

Hi Snezana,
Wonderful shot! The white wall of the house is such a good background for the colours around and on the house; the reddish brown earth, the blue symbols above the door and those bright red leaves (?) off to the right hand side. The picture is well balanced.

So essential and so complete in itself: that's for the composition. Few colours that stand out from the white wall and very interesting details: that's for the tecnique.
Fine in every sense.
Best regards,
Donato
