Photographer’s Note
The mood of Medina, Tunis
The walls which once enclosed the Medina in Tunis long since disappeared, apart from a few town gates, and their place has been taken by a ring of streets around the old town, which is in the form of an oval measuring 1,500m/1,640yds from north to south by 800m/880yds from east to west. It is the largest Medina in Tunisia and the finest after the Medina of Kairouan. Originally going back to the ninth-11th centuries, it dates in its present form largely from the Hafsid (13th century) and Turkish (17th-18th century) periods. The French demolished its outer walls but left it otherwise unchanged.
The Médina, built on a gentle hill slope on the way down to the Tunis Lake, is the historical heart of the city and home to many monuments, including palaces, such as the Dar Ben Abdallah and Dar Hussein, the mausoleum of Tourbet El Bey or many mosques such as Zitouna Mosque. Some of the fortifications have now largely disappeared around it, and it is flanked by the two suburbs of Bab Souika to the north and Bab El Jazira to the south.
But east of the original nucleus, first with the construction of the French Consulate, the modern city was built gradually with the introduction of the French protectorate at the end of the nineteenth century, on open land between the city and the lake. The axis to the structure of this part of the city is the Avenue Habib Bourguiba, designed to by the French to be a Tunisian form of Champs-Elysees in Paris with its cafes, major hotels, shops and cultural venues. On both sides of the tree lines avenue, north and south, the city was extended in various districts, with the northern end welcoming residential and business districts while the south receives industrial districts and poorer peoples.
Tunis
Tunis (Arabic: تونس, Tūnis) is the capital of the Tunisian Republic and also the Tunis Governorate, with a population of 1,200,000 in 2008. It is Tunisia's largest city.
Situated on a large Mediterranean gulf, (the Gulf of Tunis), behind the Lake of Tunis and the port of La Goulette (Halq al Wadi), the city extends along the coastal plain and the hills that surround it. At the centre of more modern development (colonial era and post) lies the old medina. Beyond this section lie the suburbs of Carthage, La Marsa, and Sidi Bou Said.
The medina is found at the centre of the city: a dense agglomeration of alleys and covered passages, full of intense scents and colours, boisterous and active trade, a surfeit of goods on offer ranging from leather to plastic, tin to the finest filigree, tourist souvenirs to the works of tiny crafts-shops.
Just through the Sea Gate (also known as the Bab el Bahr and the Porte de France), begins the modern city, or Ville Nouvelle, transversed by the grand Avenue Habib Bourguiba (often referred to by popular press and travel guides as "the Tunisian Champs-Élysées)", where the colonial-era buildings provide a clear contrast to smaller older structures. As the capital city of the country Tunis is the center of Tunisian commercial activity, as well as focus of political and administrative life in the country. The expansion of the Tunisian economy in the last decades is reflected in the booming development of the outer city where one can see clearly the social challenges brought about by rapid modernization in Tunisia. Hello George,
The man framed in the archway contributes much to the mood of this fine composition. A good long perspective with some interesting tonal contrasts offered by the turquoise shutters. I also like the presence of the lamp.

Hi George
It's a long time since I have not comment one of your marvelous shot, but I can't miss this one !
I really like the atmosphere you retranscribe here.
You bring perfectly the beauty of the medina out, and you honour the two main colours, blue and white.
Excellent idea to wait for the man right under the porch, at the ideal place.
Great picture, as usual.

Hello George!
Another superb photo job: the picture is both very interesting and truly beautiful!
Excellent choices: vertical format and pov!
Outstanding features: sharpness, exposure, dof and colors! The composition is also very good: effective and attractive! I love seeing so clearly all those architectural details! It feels like I'm there, visiting the Medina! The silhouette of that man in the bg worked perfectly to enhance the beauty of this image!
TFS - congratulations!
Best regards,
Neyvan

Namaste George,
nicely composed shot. The alley looks fantastic with the silhouetted man walking. The man added life to it and help us to show the dimension of the buildings. Nice to see the presence of the road lamp. Well done. Tfs.
Have a nice time.

Hello dear George,
One of your "best"s from Tunis. Thick black framing creates a good balance with the pale simple colors of the walls and streets.
Nice to keep the silhoutte of the walker at the end of the street which gives life to the scene.
TFS and best regards

Hello George,
It is an interesting image of typical street of the medina. The composition describes well the narrowness of the streets, and the height of the frontages, which attenuate heat. Beautiful natural colors, good clearness. Good work.
Have a nice day

Hi George
I like the yellow door nicely positioned on the vanishing point, that contrasts so well against all the blue shuttered windows & grates. Excellent sharpness & diminishing linear perspective. Tfs!

The colours of the walls are marvellous, it's a well shown yard, the man walking shows the size and how tall the buildings are:)

Hi George,
outer walls may be disappeared. But I guess narrow alleys with such gates makes this Medina quite a maze. Blue window shutters are nice extra details on white walls.

ciao George,
il colore delle finestre e l'uomo sotto l'arco sono per me gli elementi fondamentali di questo perfetto scatto nella sua composizione dai toni chiari e dalla bella luce, ben fatto
