Yaaaaaaaaawnnn....

Well, hope this wasn't your reaction upon looking at this photo - the photo that made me think about why we also tend to yawn more on a hot sunny day?

I found information on the Web* that say that there are varios reasons why we yawn:

1. The deep inhalation during a yawn is means of preventing alveolar collapse within the lung.
2. The deep inhalation while yawning stretches type II alveolar pneumocytes, which release the surfactant dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) into the layer of fluid on the alveolar surface.
3. A means of cooling the brain.
4. An action used as an unconscious communication of psychological decompression after a state of high alert.
5. An excess of carbon dioxide and lack of oxygen in the blood.
6. A way of displaying (or indicative of) apathy.
7. Tiredness.
8. A means of equalizing middle ear pressure, which can be triggered by another's yawning.

*

Interesting Yawning Facts:

* The average yawn lasts about six seconds.
* Your heart rate can rise as much as 30 percent during a yawn.
* 55 percent of people will yawn within five minutes of seeing someone else yawn.
* Blind people yawn more after hearing an audio tape of people yawning.
* Reading about yawning will make you yawn.
* Olympic athletes often yawn before competition.

Hi Robert,
Looks like we have both chosen to post animal photos today. ;o)
Your note made me smile and you've chosen a perfect photo to illustrate the text (well perhaps it's the other way around, actually). I love the tiger's attitude, he looks really bored at the idea of having his picture taken. The picture quality is excellent and pin-sharp. I just regret that you cut off his front paws at the bottom.
Have a nice day.
Brigitte

Hehe,
Not this handsome guy, but your note made me yawn, really.
I usually test my nerves by trying not to yawn while looking at someone yawning. This is a kind of personal improvement test for me ;P
Cheers,
Deniz

Well chosen focal point, you start it with a yawn and end it with a slight blur, your timing is perfect to capture the tiger at its best yawn. Great shot.

Hi Robert.

Wowwwwwwwwwwwww...the moment you caught is lovely! Perfect. REally difficult for me.

Furthermore, the colours are excellent....

Excellent timing of the yawning tiger. You didn't explain why he has his tongue out! ;D You have captured excellent detail; we can see the hairs in his fur very clearly. Well done
Kath

I showed yoru stupendous neat image to my coworkers and also read the note: of course all of them (5 people, including me) yawned :)
would it be possible not to chop off the poor beast´s paw with a 4:3 compo?

Hi Robert,

Impressing yawn of this splendid tiger. Good timing of the catch of sight. I like much the smoothness of the image on the animal. The natural colors are pleasant. Beautiful glance Roger and thank you for this small lesson on the yawn…

With all my friendships and a very good evening,

Jean-Charles
