It's become a kind of "rite of passage" for Peace Corps volunteers in Kenya to go rafting down the Nile in Uganda. About 20 of us went on this trip. I couldn't go on the raft (ear problems), so I positioned myself a couple of kilometers downstream to wait for the boats to come around the corner. The Nile is wide and very powerful, and this spot is just at the point where the rapids become unrunnable (except for experts) and the waves are very high.

I saw this guy doing his laundry there (very common in Africa, though it's more often the women), and at first I thought he was spoiling my shot of the river. Then I realized that he was what made the shot work. So I shot him.

I was using a 70-300 zoom at full extension to capture the power of the waves. I got the waves and the man in focus, but the foreground is not, even at f16. So I cropped it out. I also used Noiseware to get rid of the noise (why there was noise at this exposure I don't know), and a little play with Shadows and Highlights to get it all right.

I often work in Poli color profile, that being what the printer at the lab I use is set for. For this download, I changed it back to the usual sRGB, but that shifted the colors more than usual, so I worked with Levels a bit to get it back where it was supposed to be.

The rafting camp was just outside Jinja, a town on the shore of Lake Victoria where it empties into the Nile. The lake, by the way, is no longer considered the source of the Nile; sorry, Stanley!

UPDATE: I edited the photo in a workshop following a discussion with dlevy23; I think it looks much better now.

Hello Daniel,
Wow! What a picture! Stunning.

Very powerfull photo Daniel, I just wonder myself about to crop the lower part of it, the slice of land you show us, maybe it will give even more strenght to the moment, nontheless I like it very much. The sharpness of the water is outstanding. Take care.

very very nice,i like the moving water ....

Hi Daniel,
Why did you have noise in this photo? Just check out the exposure:1\16 and 1\1600s.It must have been a very high ISO for these values.
I find it a good photo, though.
Regards,
Nelu

Hello Daniel,an interesting note.
The powerful water is amazing, you have captured the speed and the force so well.
I am glad that you realised just what you were seeing! Otherwise we wouldn't have this wonderful shot.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Hi Dan,
That is a great capture with the man, apparently undisturbed by the huge water just near by! Excellent POV and framin with all water falling as a BG and great texture of that water!
The colors could be slightly improved though.. i did a quick WS too!.. hope you dont mind!
Regards
Laurent

Hi Daniel
Your small gallery is very nice and interesting!
No, the guy washing his clothes didn't spoil at all your photo. It is always interesting to see (if you have the opportunity)the local people. he gives a beautiful contrast with the textured and strong waves. I like as well the exposure, colors and framing.
Cheers
Marilyn

Hello Daniel
Incredible, amazing! The view in full zoom, with the layers of the 'jumping' waves as a backdrop to the man, quietly washing clothes..a contrast of sorts IMO. I think you've done a good job in the WS, where you removed the bluish cast amongst other touch-ups, but the picture turns up better. Wonderful shot!

Angshu

Hi Daniel,
terrific shot! Nile is really powerfull, and you proove it here. Very good eye at catching the shot, and regarding the out of focus foreground... for me it works perfect. It gives the shot perspective on the distance from us to the man, I think it makes it even better! TFS. Rafa.

I had no idea that the Nile had rapids such as these. Great shot, really interesting how you showed the water behind the subject.

Que de courant, c'est impressionnant !
Belle image de vie quotidienne.
Marie
