Photographer’s Note

While on a walk in the Zambian wilderniss, we walked into a fire. These are lit on purpose to get the land ready for another crop.

I really like this photograph, and for many reasons. First of all it reminds me of some of some of the old blue sensitive film images, such as from Strand. They have a sense of illumination that is quite unique. I enjoy the texture of the rocks in the foreground, and depth into the smokey area. From the smoke are strong shapes and design from the trees, with the single vertical figure of the man, in his perspective size to his environment.
