[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
Taken at the town of Mut, in Dakhla Oasis, Egypt.

This is on top of the big mud hill at the ruins of the old city. These are touted as the "Mummies" of Mut. The hill is basically a cemetary where bones are scattered everywhere, human and other animals. The tombs are not only wide open, but starting to deteriorate to the point of having skulls rolling into the streets below, where you can see the kids kicking them and using them as soccer (non USA - football) balls. Can't really blame the kids though, it is a very, very poor city and the families really can't afford actual "balls".

The other thing about these tombs, if you look closely at the photo, is that you can see cloth from not too old shrouds... as well as having some meat still on certain bones in the cemetary. When I showed these photos to a guide from Mut, he insisted these weren't human bones...sorry, but that's a human skull.

Terrible shot but it reports a truth.

Hi John,

strong image, terrible story...but it is also one of the faces of human world.

TFS,
Adrian

Sad reality... tour image is very powerful, and your note illustrates the point... we are very lucky to live in this country and should never take that for granted.

Hi John

Intresting and at the same disturbing image. Also sad reflection on how WE live in the modern world.

Good note.

Andy

Hello John,
A strange feeling,I would think, to be standing amongst these human remains. It does us no harm to be reminded of things that are usually hidden from view. Where life is so hard perhaps we should not find it shameful that there is no respect for these people, even in death. Your shot shows us everything in grim detail - and surprisingly beautiful colours.
Best wishes....Maggie

John: powerful shot and informative note - that gets the full green. c

Uuuuu!
Amazing,...I have seen many things in India but this is like from a fiction movie,...no comment, thanks for sharing.

Hallo John!
Das ist Wahnsinn, in welcher Welt leben wir?
Ich bin geschockt!

Interesting note John, and a pretty good picture, a bit basic, but showing us a place I've never seen. It would have been interesting to see a shot of the kids playing soccer with the skull, as terrible as that sounds. But as you say, they hardly have a choice.

Regards,
David

Hi John,

Good photojournalist shot and incredible note. You certainly have been out of the beaten path.

Cheers!

André
