A Golden Teeth
I met this woman in Phnom Penh were she gathered a large crowd of people around here. I had really no idea what her position was i any sort of religion, maybe a kind of guru? But when she saw me she came closer, while the other people around her moved away. There she stood, smiling to me and of course i gave a smile in return. With her golden teeth and with spectacles which are only one size to big she looks great.
I put a small vigenette around the top for bringing her face out more to the much brighter background.

02-08-2008: Update
Kevin came up with a good explanation on who she probably is:
"The white robe and the collection of 'phra prim' suggest that she is a 'mee chee' (a nun, not all shave their hair) and she is probably a religious teacher."

Good morning Henk

An excellent portrait,as you usually do and we are used to see from your side.
Cute smile,the golden teeth...I don`t know ;-).
The only way when receive a smile to respond with a smile. The vignetting have a good effect on top of the frame.
Great quality.

My kind regards,
Lucian

PS:to be honest,I was waiting the other one ;-)

Hi Henk,

Hahaha, mooi zeg!

Groeten!
Dennis

Excellent portrait Henk, a really professional work, I love how you have captured her natural looks and mood, FANTASTIC!!!

have a nice day,
Fabio.

Hi Henk,

Interesting woman and details she wears in her dress. The golden tooth is a real eyecatcher here. It does remind me of the place where I was born as they also have the tradition of using golden teeth. Excellent portrait with an effective vignetting to enhance the prominence of the face. Thanks Henk.

My mother had one of the golden tooth back when we were in Laos. Actually she reminded of her a little bit, my mother is half Cambodian. Great potrait of this very proud woman who must have gone through much in her life in Cambodia.
Thanks so much, Henk. Have a great day.

Hi Henk
excellent this portrait ! THis face is interesting and expressive but the best is the decorations around the neck !
Interestng and instructive portrait

Hi my dear friend,

She's probably not a guru, because their followers never move away; they would rather stand between you and her... :-P)

After The Man with the Golden Gun, here you are doing a woman with a golden teeth. Your story don't tell us who she was or if she had convinced you to jump in her sect, but next time I'll see you, if you have a golden teeth, I will know what happened... :-P)

I'm really interested to see what you have done with the vignetting effect. I read here and there that a lot of pros are doing it. I use to do it in my very first photos, maybe 3 years ago, but since then I've understood that most of people are trying to get rid of them when created by lenses. I didn't know exactly where to stand, as I feel that they are sometime very welcomed in certain landscapes or portraits, in order to keep the focus into the image, but observing what you have done here is a confirmation of their benefits under good circumstances. I also have the impression that you have done some on the lower part as well, but I guess you would have mentioned it if it was the case.

I often repeat the same thing about the importance of finding the right subjects, the art of being able to identify a particular face in a crowd, the capacity to recognize an expression or facial features that will represent an interest or evoke an emotion. She certainly have that, but not only about her face; here you have a combination of a distinctive look and a colourful personality, from the jewels she wears, her glasses and her singular teeth.

All these elements are there to capture our interest and retain attention. Because she's surrounded by white, her face and golden bling-bling stand out.

Have a great day!

André

Dag Henk,

indeed a lovely portrait, and let me tell you I support the vignetting completely!
What an interesting person you photographed - she has enough personality to be a main character of some good novel - all those details on her, her expression...a very special portrait for sure.

Good job, Mr Canoniste ;)

Good Morning Henk,

The vignetting is good idea - redicing the too much white. I think the her look is very deeply - she can be an initiate person.
For me the tilted maybe broken eyeglasses gives a special feeling ( to be honest strong than the golden teeth) and as she didn't want to correct her straight head pose.

Have a nice day!
Miklós

Hoi Henk,
Fijne dag
Groetjes
Wanda

hello Henk
the portrait is of course very beautiful!I don't know anything about the vignetting, but by looking your photo ,I guess what is it!I would like to know how to obtain this effect,I like this very much!More than the golden teath,I like the great sharpness of the hair standing out the bright background, and the tilted glasses give this woman an interesting expression!
Have a nice day.

hi henk,
quite funny, her hairstyle, her glasses askew, a nice portraiture perfectly framed and handled.
as usual, i would say.

I wonder how old she is; certainly a lot younger than a lot of your subjects, yet she has an interesting and "lived-in" face. The skewed glasses, golden tooth and the wispy hair are all of interest to the viewer, along with her eclectic array of jewellery. Unusual to find such a plain background; what was it? The vignette idea works well, as there is a lot of white, including her dress. Another good portrait for your collection.

Hello Henk,

I like this new portrait ! This woman is very astonishing and multiple details attracts the attention. The tilted glasses. Her golden teeth. Its jewels.
Very astonishing.
The light artificial vignetting is a very good idea to focus the attention on the subject.
Very good portrait.

Hi Henk,

when I saw the title I could image someone strange with a golden teeth and that's what we see here. Man, this glasses and uncombed hair really make the composition. Superb clarity and definition as usual!

goede foto Henk,
Mooi man,
prettige dag.

A funny and enjoyable portrait, Henk. The best are her spectacles...I think there's no way to fit them straight on her face. I miss some colors here, but there's nothing you could do about that and there's many details to observe with pleasure to compensate that.
Have a nice day,
ricardo

Hi Henk,

I'm not much in portrait photography, its kinda not my type, except models :D

However beside the kind of work which is in high levels as usual, this one here has an extra effect and thats from capturing. You say the woman with the golden teeth, I say the woman with the busted glasses. Great capture worthy one, and not just another boring portrait.
I'd say its a bit humorous, and I mean the picture and not the person.

Now about those PP levels, like I said your work is good as usual, however I have a couple of issues to discuss with.
I don't know about the lighting, her blouse is cotton white right? where does this puple shades and shinny areas come from? I get the feeling that you've mixed a HSL/Splitting tone from the neck and below where everything looks a bit unnatural

Another thing is the pearl necklace, the orange colour is too much over it. I'd try to reduce the shadow cast over the right side.

As for the vignetting behind, I wouldn't notice it, its not disturbing and I agree on that.

I could create a WS if you're interested trying to correct a couple of details from my POV.

Regards
Stelios

A very nice portrait Henk. Good detail in her face. It would have been interesting to know more about her.
Phil

Hi Henk,
a wonderful portrait! I love this one, somehow a very strange look, the golden teeth as well as the tilted glasses. And the vignetting is very good, usually you don`t want to have vignetting in your shot, but this time it looks very good. I like all of your portraits and this is a subject I can learn a lot, I didn`t do that many portraits so far, only know the basics about portrait photography, so therefore I closely study every single of your portraits, thanks for sharing!

Take care

Hoi Henk,
Veel wit, he!

Hi Henk,
an excellent portrait and an expressive face. The golden teeth brings a very good feeling. Excellent quality as usual.

Hi, Henk -

The outsized ears and the cockeyed glasses really make this a strange one! Oh, and the tooth, of course. The vignette does help.

Best,
Dan

Hello Henk,
This woman has a special look which immediately calls the attention and she is very imposing.
Despite this, I have the impression that she is looking at you with some expectation. She starts smiling, yes. But there is something in her eyes, in her glance which seems (to me) contradictory. Perhaps was she trying to hypnotise you ???
I am glad you had your big MarkII to protect you then ;-)
Cheers,
Marianne

Hi Henk.

Excellent portrait, as usual in you. The details (including the teeth) are lovely again!

Hi Henk,
This is an awesome portrait depicting the reality of life and hard times. This is likely one of those situtions where the lenses are hand-me-downs but perhaps better than nothing. Also, no opticians around to adjust the frames. I like it alot. TFS. Gerald

Dag Henk,

Goed werk Henk, bedankt.

Groeten uit Vlaanderen,
John.

Hello Henk!
A really nice new picture you brought from Cambodia. Unfortunately I have never been there, only my brother, but as I saw many beautiful pictures of this country (most of them were from Angkor Wat) I´m sure I´ll go there one time.
Well....your picture is just great, you took it in the exactly right moment and captured the mood perfectly. The expression in her face is just brilliant and the glasses she wears a little bit askew look great. Her head is positioned perfectly, a little bit off central and the choice of f/4 was perfect.
Have a great weekend and best regards,
Jonas

Like you and my street shots (which I gave up for the next times...) I have a hard time finding words to comment your portraits. I don't like portraits that much. The subjects have to be either very beautiful or erode a very beautiful attitude in order to touch me in some way. I can't say that this one manages to do that... Technically, it's perfect. The vignette you added is a great addition and works very well focusing the viewer of the face and compressing the light in the centre. That was a great decision. But the soul or aura of this woman fails to impress me. Even her glasses are too loose.

Hi Henk, after all these Titans what left to say.. I really like it, a superb portrait.
Best regards Steve.

I like the portrait, Henk.
There's something so youthful in her face, but the glasses...
what can I say about the glasses: not only they are one
size too big, but they also look like 'male' ones, as
opposed to 'female', if you know what I mean.
Interesting collection of jewelry on her - I suppose each
piece means something?
Cheers,
Robi

Hi Henk.
Fascinating portrait. Your shot is great, but the face is also one of great distinction, full of character. The lop-sided and enormous glasses are just as interesting and eccentric as the one golden tooth. If she is a holy person of some sort, then your vignette effect is appropriate, perhaps, in creating a kind of halo around her! Excellent portrait, full of interest.

ps. vignette? i agree with what you've done here. i think, the background would have been too bright without it.

Hi Henk,
I wonder how are you able to find always such an inspirational face like this one for your portraits. It seems that you never push to hard to get such a great portrait, everything looks so natural and instinctive as you never walk the line to force people to enter in one of your frame. This might be a gift, or excellent skills and tecnique or experience..or a mix of those elements..the result, anyway, is always beautiful and pleasant to look at.
Thank you for sharing it.

This is a fine portrait, Henk, She is a fascinating subject and you have caught her well, with a nice light on her face. The crooked glasses, the gold tooth and the whisps of hair against the sky give it a strong charter. Henk,
I love this portait; she looks just like a harried teacher of small children. Obviously one small child grabbed her glasses and twisted them askew; while her hair stand up in little horns from the frenzy of dealing with small children.

Oops, I see that is a general opinion, that she is a teacher.
