Ta Prohm is the modern name of a temple at Angkor, Cambodia, built in the Bayon style largely in the late 12th and early 13th centuries and originally called Rajavihara. Located approximately one kilometre east of Angkor Thom and on the southern edge of the East Baray near Tonle Bati, it was founded by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prohm has been left in much the same condition in which it was found: the photogenic and atmospheric combination of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of Angkor's most popular temples with visitors.

History of Ta Prohm

Foundation and expansion

After ascending the throne of Cambodia in 1181 A.D., Jayavarman VII embarked on a massive program of construction and public works. Rajavihara ("royal temple"), today known as Ta Prohm ("ancestor Brahma"), was one of the first temples founded pursuant to that program. The stele commemorating the foundation gives a date of 1186 A.D.

Jayavarman VII constructed Rajavihara in honor of his family. The temple's main image, representing Prajnaparamita, the personification of wisdom, was modelled on the king's mother. The northern and southern satellite temples in the third enclosure were dedicated to the king's guru and his elder brother respectively. As such, Ta Prohm formed a complementary pair with the temple monastery of Preah Khan, dedicated in 1191 A.D., the main image of which represented the Bodhisattva of compassion Lokesvara and was modelled on the king's father.

The temple's stele records that the site was home to more than 12,500 people (including 18 high priests and 615 dancers), with an additional 80,000 souls in the surrounding villages working to provide services and supplies. The stele also notes that the temple amassed considerable riches, including gold, pearls and silks.Expansions and additions to Ta Prohm continued as late as the rule of Srindravarman at the end of the 13th century.

Abandonment and restoration

After the fall of the Khmer empire in the 15th century, the temple of Ta Prohm was abandoned and neglected for centuries. When the effort to conserve and restore the temples of Angkor began in the early 20th century, the École française d'Extrême-Orient decided that Ta Prohm would be left largely as it had been found, as a "concession to the general taste for the picturesque." According to pioneering Angkor scholar Maurice Glaize, Ta Prohm was singled out because it was "one of the most imposing [temples] and the one which had best merged with the jungle, but not yet to the point of becoming a part of it". Nevertheless, much work has been done to stabilize the ruins, to permit access, and to maintain "this condition of apparent neglect."

Hi Danos,
What a mystical place with a very intriguing history. You've captured this wonderfully ... the photographer gave the scene some perspective. Well written notes and very interesting to read. Well composed with good image quality. Well done! tfs and have a nice weekend.

Kalimera Danos,
good capture of part of the ruins with a lot of great details in this good overview. The photographer looks a bit unreal, which adds a lot of interest. I like the different textures everywhere.

Ta Prohm is an amazing place and well worth a visit. I would have preferred it without the other photographer, but I do know how busy this place is and you were lucky to have only one westerner in shot. Well done

it's a wonderful place, you captured it very well, the framing is excellent, and including the photographer preparing his shot through the window is making this composition different, unique

Hello Danos,
A lot of interesting details & textures in this photos. The photographer gives a special & funny human element & sense of scale. difficult lighting but you managed it very well. Regards. Latiff.

Hi Danos,

I remember to see a shot of this amazing place a hundred times but it's never too much. Very impressive architecture and details. Wonderful scenary and capture. Well done!

Very good shot, accurately composed, with natural colours. I especially love this little touch - the photographer on the left, caught in the act ;-)
I'm not sure about "No Entry" plaque, but surely it was hard to avoid and together with another photographer, it was the part of scenery after all.
Best regards

Hi Danos,
This is indeed a magical shot! Looks like it has come out of the history pages. The photographer's addition was a very good touch. I loved it.
Well done,

Hi Danos,
The man through the window looks funny, i have no problems with that. Those wooden things with rope is something i don't like. I was there myself and had a lot of work to do to keep them out of my pictures. I have a much more close-up from the tree and the door to avoid those wooden things. But under these circumstances the final result looks pretty good and gives us a nice view how magical this place it. A real nice overview...you did well here with your wide-angle.

Hello Danos,

Frankly...at first I thought 'well, here's another Ta Prohm' shot, I have seen many of them, but then I spotted the photographer and that made a world of difference. A great shot. I don't mind the wooden things that much, they seem to be part of the scene these days...

Hi Danos,

I like your humoristic approach of these ancient cultural inheritance with the fellow –photographer appearing from an opening in the wall. I think it makes the picture more open.

Hi Danos,

I remember this place from photos of some of my friends. As I remember I was mostly impressed by trees and their roots becoming one with magnificent build structures. Jungle slowly taking this place for its own. It is remarkable processes, no wonder that attracts so many of us. The atmophere in your capture appears like from the past, only the man with camera gives an orientation of modern nowdays. Excellent ambient, dominated by size and time process where our presence seems so small and unimportant. Darkish mood of small glimp of the sky gives some comfort but the mood of time process stays and dominates. Remarkable documentation, thank you for sharing it!

Wish you lovely Sunday,
Jeri

the spontaneity of the moment with the photographer extracting the head, break the solemn seriousness of the image, it is a great contrast! Jejeje.

Γειά σας Danos,
Amazing and magical place!... Very well captured with that subdued light. I guess that it would still be a great photo without him, but I kind of like the presence of the photographer in the window, acting like an alter-ego of yourself. I agree with Henk about the ropes on the corner not being so pretty, but they don't disturb me much and in a way they give a realist touch to the photo.

Haha, well captured with the photographer (may be from TE ;-), Danos. Yes, this is quite a photogenic place and you show that well here. Amazing those roots growing over the ruins - it's a magic place with an incredible atmosphere. Excellent exposure and composition - The best, I repeat, is the photographer - it's original and it gives scale.
Friendly regards,
ricardo
