Ta Prohm
Back to Cambodia.
Ta Prohm is a temple in the jungles of Cambodia. It was built in the thirteenth century by Jajavarma VII. While other monuments in the Angkor region have been cleared of the encroaching jungle, Ta Phrom has been left as it was found by French explorers who rediscovered it in the nineteenth century. The jungle trees have almost eaten the temple which makes it a walhalla for photographers. A very inspiring and interesting location.

Better known as the "Lara Croft - Tombraider" temple. I did not see the movie, but it seems large pieces were filmed here and this view seems to be the Tombraider spot...for who cares. Some people stand in the doorway shout "Tombraider"..!!!
Some people are really crazy in doing these things ;-)

I was here for the magic of Ta Prohm in the early morning hours without any other toursits. The first rays of morninglight are coming in through the door....like magic.

Hi Henk.

Another lovely pic! The effect of the branches in the temple is...wowwwwwwwwwwww.

My compliments!

Hello Henk! Amazing place. Good lightness, very good POV. Original composition. Fantastic effect. Good luck!

Hello Henk,

An astonishing sight of these ruins. I often saw them in books but I was always astonished by the force which the vegetation could have. These impressive roots are able all to crush with time.
Very good job.

A+

Henk,
I'm completely disappointed. I read your title and was already guessing what place that is looking into your thumbnail, but the title promised more than the main post is showing. Where is the raider? Where is Lara, where is Angelina?
To be honest, that isn't the only thing that I'm missing. I would prefer something more comprehensive. More overview of the whole place. OK, I never have been there and I don't really know the photographic possibilities and maybe I'm beeing somewhat to picky.
Peter

hi,
great place... i wanna go there ;))
nice shoot, well done!

all the best, dany

Hi Henk,
Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Okay, now I hope you have something serious in stock for the launch of Indiana Jones IV !
I have seen this corner several times here already so this lowers the wow effect but the place is still every inch as magic as you have enjoyed it, the framing pushing the door to the side puts emphasis on the nature strength and the rendering is excellent.
Have a nice day JY

Excellent quality. Getting there very early provides you with a good light which is not that easy to get later during the day. I especially like the light through the door at the other end. Very mysterious.

Hallo Henk,
Prachtig beeld.
Groeten
Marc

The light through the doorway really is the icing on the cake of this one. Looking at the tree roots first you don't appreciate the scale, but when you realise the doorway is a full sized door and not a mere cubby-hole the impact hits home. Maybe that's what Peter is getting at. It's not an immediate WOW, but a slow burning appreciation. Maybe you need to have seen it in reality to fully understand the image. Without the harsh light under which most of us have seen it the details are amazing. Well done
Kath

Hello Henk
I like the way you framed these incredible roots growing inside de stone. It would be impressive to enter through the door like Indiana Jones.
Cheers

Dag Henk,

Bedankt!

Groeten,
John.

Hi Henk,
The magic Ta-Prohm... I had also great time there, and as you did, went early, just after sunrise, and I had teh whole temple for myself.
I am sorry to hear that there are some alien objects around this site spoiling a good composition. This one is quite tight, not able to show the full splendor of the site, but I understand the situation... no escape.
The clarity is excellent, as usual.

Btw, I used your quote the other day in a forum... I wrote it in ".." but forgot to acknowledge it to you. I am sorry.

I hope I can come back in full to TE soon... very busy at work and with baby.

cheers
Jorge

Hoi Henk,

Groetjes, Dennis

Hello Henk,

It does seem like Lara Croft will jump out of the door any minute. I wonder how the whole face of the temple look like but you have captured the doorway very well. I like the sharpness and the luminosity is very good too considering what seems to be a dark shady place.

Good work.
Regards
Kamran

Hi Henk, a superb work here, I love the great sharp and detail of this picture, the presence of Lara croft's atmosphere makes it nicely funny too, excellent picture!!!

have a nice day,
Fabio.

Congrats on getting a fine foto of a famous spot with no tourists.....and no idiot tourists shouting "Tombraider" in the frame!.

Im curious to know how was your experience during your recent visit to Angkor Wat and Siem Reap village. Is it completely overrun now with above mentioned tourists? Does it still offer enchantment and reflection, or is it more of the Disney World feel which comes with the "UNESCO World Heritage Site" package for a site as famous as this one?.

Mooie foto, Henk.

hello henk

i read your discussion with peter. i kind of lean towards agreeing with you. including ropes, etc. just for broader view would be annoying. meanwhile, this is not your only post from Ta Prohm and for an overview one should look at your total collection. i think. that aside, i like the shot and how you have shown the jungle slowly eating up the ancien glory.

warm regards,
kristaps

hello Henk
I have seen others pictures of this place and I guess that it's not easy to find a good POV here! But you did it very weel, shooting when the sun was on the door and on this superb roots, thus the clarity is perfect, and the colours wonderfulT!his is a splendid detail of the temple!
Kind regards.
Pascale

Hallo Henk,
very familiar, I have seen and also played the old ones. Just a pleasant frame with the door, roots and some stones. All together are just enough for a reminder. Looking at this I think there is not much light difference, so exposure must be done with care. Great result, astonishing sharpness.
Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Hi, Henk -

Yes, tourists can be a problem! (Just ask anyone who lives in San Francisco....)

A very interesting study of the ruins, and the touch of sunlight in the doorway is inspired.

Best,
Dan

Henk,
Very impressive natural building !
It worth the effort to get up early to catch those first lights... Nice job !
Regards,
JB.

Salut Henk! I saw the movie and I liked it although I am normally more into problem films ... don't laugh! Amazing how the trees grow over the building and I guess it goes fast and everything is taken in by the jungle if they do not take care. I like the light that shines just a little back there in the door making the whole situation magic. You gave the old stone a very modern appearance with your wide white frame. I wrote that before but I really like that, it takes the moldy feeling away and gives this incredible temple the necessary attention. Aen Gruess, Barbara.

Hoi Henk,

Hi Henk,
Indeed an amazing place, that makes us dream of adventure movies like Tombraider and many others. The fineness of details you achieved is as remarkable as the place itself. We can count the number of thin lines in every stone! I wonder how it is possible to see so well inside that door on the left. It would still be great if there was noise, but not even that exists(!!!). I guess that the door is of "normal" height, if not taller than that, so the scale must be equally overwhelming.
BRAVO! TFS.

Man,

As a matter of fact, these kind of touristic locations deserve an extra effort to get there before busload of visitors invade the site. Here, not only were you the master of the domain and at ease to work properly, you were also there to catch the first rays of light. That's the difference between pro looking shots and the rest of us.

Again, I like your composition, strategically placing the door at the bottom of the frame, and therefore, increasing the impression of excessive weight and invasion from the jungle. By subjecting the doorway under that visual stress, it also takes more importance and drives attention. Because you've been there, you know exactly the proportion of things and although some might think it's a normal size doorway, we know how small it really is, as this civilization would not have giants like you... :-P)

Cheers Goliath!

André

Hi Henk,
yes, I saw the movie, but to be honest, it wasn`t that good. I`ve seen better movies. I really liked the game, but the movie wasn`t that good, not bad, but there are far better ones. Yes, Lara is missing in your shot... unfortunetly ;-)
But I really like it, nice how you captured these ruins, looks amazing. I have never seen anything like that before, must have been amazing trip, wasn`t it?
Nice one, keep more coming from Cambodia!

Take care
Mark

Hi Henk!
Just noticed this one. Nice job, of capturing this classic shot. I recall it can be quite dark. But you have really done an excellent job of capturing this in all the fine detail and clarity. The subtle colors are perfect too! take care,

Hi Henk,
somehow a violent place.. nature is struggling to reconquer the ground, some stones look like burned trees, and the light in the back of the room could be a fire and not the morning light...but being there it may be very peaceful. Good job. Phantastic scenery.

Hello Henk!
TA prohm,my favourite place in the Angkor region. You did well to go there very early,so you could the all the fine details without "disturbing" tourists. Here you found a nice detail and you composed the image very well with the square pilar at the right side and the curve of the root in the oposite corner.Thinking about the early morning light,it`s a fantastic result.
Regards,Leo

Hi Henk,
Wow, this looks like a mysterious place and the size of those roots is awesome! You've managed well with the light (or the PP) as it looks like there wasn't much sun there. I laughed whil reading your note as I imagined you waiting to take this shot for all these carzy people to move out of the way! Luckily you shouldn't meet too many Lara Croft fans in Etretat or Mont Saint Michel! ;o)

Hello Henk,

what a fantastic shot, it shows so much detail, especially in the door surround, and easy to see why it was such a good choice for filming part of tombraider. There's not much colour in it, a few subtle tones but also it's an image I think would suit a B&W conversion. It's wonderfully sharp and many congratulations on a superb capture.

Goedendag mijn geacht Vriend,
Glad to be back and discover your lovely new postings and fabulous work.
Again for this one, an impressive composition but, most of all, a perfect light management which, I suppose, has costed you some pp headaches...
As all my collegues, I am as well desperate to see Lara in the middle of these magical ruins ;-)
But I am sure it was just a teaser...
Have a great day.

Great shot from a historic temple place. I like the timeless atmosphere with all the nature. Well done.

Dag, Henk.

Hi Henk
I know this place so well. It's nice to see this vision without any chinese or japanese tourist ! ...
Very beautifull picture as usual
Bertrand

Tourists are simply unavoidable here, so I thought until seeing this, I imagined even before sunrise this place would be full. I saw the film on an airplane, the sound system wasn't working well and I actually fell asleep in the middle. All I remember is Angelina and the guy jumping off the Hong Kong skyscraper.

Wow, I wish I made this shot! Great composition. It shows just enough to spark your imagination and make up the rest of this place. It's like reading a good book. This really adds to the mystique of the photo. Well done, Henk.

Hello Henk,

You need to see the movie to realize how close this image is to some of the images in the movie. Very nice image showing this interesting feature. I always wondered how these trees grow around such large temples and palaces. A beautiful sight well captured in your image. Thanks Henk.

Hola Henk.
The light inside the temple produces an interesting and mysterious eyes catching point, the huge roots give the impression of gigantic tentacles of an octopus holding the wall of the well known temple, holding or destroying it. Your POV is good and also the clarity and sharpness of your shot. Very good details.
Well done. TFS.
