Photographer's Note

I would like to share the early-morning view from the roof of our hotel in Lhasa with you. Visible in the picture are a few roofs of the Jokhang complex, the religious heart of Tibet. The morning haze gives a bit of diffuse light, which creates several layers in this picture.

The Jokhang is a large complex in the centre of the old Tibetan part of Lhasa. It hosts an inner kora (pilgrim circuit), statues, several chapels and houses for monks. It is a very special place, vibrating from spiritual energy. There's so much to see and to feel, that you could spend days in and around the Jokhang without ever feeling the urge to go somewhere else!

Our hotel was the Mandala Hotel, which is located in the southwest corner of the Barkhor kora. From our room we had a wonderful view on the pilgrims that were going in circles around the Jokhang. From the roof you have a wonderful view over a large part of the city and the surroundings, including the Potala palace.
